Stephen King's movie The Shining included many outdoor shots of this lodge.

Timberline Lodge is on Mt Hood in Oregon. It is a very popular place to ski, mountain climb, inner tube and in the summer a gorgeous place to hike and camp. Skiing and snowboarding are year round there. You can stay at the lodge or stop in to look around, have a meal, etc....

There have been many movies shot at the lodge, Stephen King's "The Shining" probably being the most well known recently....

1980 movie The Shining, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, used aerial shots of Timberline as part of its opening scene. Film of the exterior of the Timberline Lodge is also used for some establishing shots of the fictional Overlook Hotel throughout the movie. However, several of the exterior shots in the film which purport to show the Lodge, such as those with the hedge maze or loading dock, were not taken at the Timberline Lodge itself, but at Elstree Studios in England, using a mock-up of the south face of the Lodge. There is no hedge maze (and hardly any level ground) at the Timberline Lodge. All interior scenes were shot at Elstree Studios as well, and do not depict the interior of the Timberline Lodge.

In 1981, Boris Sagal was directing the TV movie World War III starring Rock Hudson. During filming, Sagal was killed in Timberline Lodge's parking lot when he walked into the tail rotor blades of a helicopter, almost decapitating him.

The 1973 version of Lost Horizon, starring Liv Ullman, Michael York, Peter Finch, Sally Kellerman, John Gielgud and Olivia Hussey had portions shot in the Timberline parking lot. Blizzard conditions needed in the film were created by a helicopter. Other scenes were shot in the immediate area while the lodge was a base for the cast and crew.

The 1993 film Hear No Evil was partly filmed at Timberline.

The 1960 film All the Young Men, starring Alan Ladd and Sidney Poitier, had some snow scenes filmed at Timberline.

The 1952 film Bend of the River starring James Stewart, Arthur Kennedy, Julie Adams, and Rock Hudson was partially filmed on the snow above Timberline Lodge, near the Magic Mile chairlift.

The 1941 short musical film, Jingle Belles is set at the lodge.

How interesting! I'm a huge Stephen King fan. "The Shining" was one of my favorites. The ski lodge looks wonderful. I may have to book a trip. I bet the skiing is great!

What's great about this area is you can ski, swim, hike all in the summer months LOL

I've been to the Timberline Lodge as well. It's a beautiful place, with beautiful surroundings. I was unaware its theatrical renowned, or I have forgotten, but was more into the historical part of it. In any event, it is a beautiful lodge, built as you would have a ski-type lodge in your mind.

I am always in awe of all of the carved wood, and the other original architecture there.... It is a beautiful lodge steeped in history!!!

I had no idea that's where The Shining was filmed. I didn't know the hotel was real. Thought it was just a set. After seeing the movie I don't know if I could stay there. That was a scary movie. :shock:

All of the inside shots were shot in a studio....it was just some of the outside shots at the lodge.... :wink:

In that case maybe I could stay there. :-)

I, too, love going to Timberline! Being a born and bred Oregonian, yeah, that's my place. Although I don't ski!!!! I love to sit in the lodge and drink hot chocolate....MMMmmmm
