A couple of weeks ago I had a delivery of fabric go missing from my porch. They replaced it so I'm not out the money or fabric but it still p!$$&s me off! This happened once before but not in a couple of years.

I have been off work all week and I was hoping that my other deliveries would come but, of course they didn't. One is Monday and another is Wednesday and I can't stay home for them. Everything I have ordered since, I am having delivered to my work.

I set this up tonight with my webcam. The Logitech software has a motion detection video capture. I tested it out, walked quickly onto the porch and it worked good. I will tape the cord down and cover the laptop with a cardboard box because I also neet to cat-proof it.

This sign is also being taped to my front door when I leave in the morning!

The nerve of some people. I swear!!

I hope you catch the thieves or at least catch them on tape.

Magdalena 12-19-2010 10:47 PM

   Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you!!

greensleeves 12-19-2010 10:52 PM

I hope it works, thieves seem to be so nervy now.

greensleeves 12-19-2010 10:52 PM

Sorry, double post

plainjane 12-19-2010 10:53 PM

This really makes me mad also! I would LOVE for you to get a pic of the thief (although you may lose another pkg)!

Gramof6 12-19-2010 11:28 PM

I'm really sorry this has happened to you but unfortunately it doesn't shock me. It is sad that you cannot have deliveries made without a thief taking it! Hope it never happens to you again!

sewTinker 12-19-2010 11:43 PM

how about if place a couple of empty packages out there (you could put newspaper in them for weight), don't put up the warning sign, and keep your video running. Might be interesting just to see who is visiting...

k9dancer 12-19-2010 11:43 PM

Of course, now that they are warned, they may break your window & steal your computer.

I don't believe in warnings. Just do it.

sewTinker 12-19-2010 11:49 PM

this reminds me of when my parents owned a little deli market for a few years. I embroidered them a sign that said: "Please don't steal. God will see you, and Charlie Might!"

(charlie was my dad. lol...) Speaking of Stealing... I stole the saying from a reader's digest.

BizzieLizzie 12-20-2010 12:19 AM

Best of luck. Hope you catch the culprit!

quiltinghere 12-20-2010 04:03 AM

I agree = put up the camera but not the sign. Are you leaving the window shade up too?

Do you have a neighbor that can accept the package for you?

Maybe next time you can get it delivered to your place of employment.

Love that ur being Pro-Active !!!!!

AlwaysQuilting 12-20-2010 04:52 AM

It's inconvenient but safer to have all packages require a signature. If no one's home they take the package back to their depot and leave you a note to come get it.
At least that's what I do nowadays.
I even stopped my daily newspaper because someone stole it 5 out of 7 days weekly.
These kind of people make me sick.
I'm old enough to remember not having to lock our house up or our cars etc. What's happened?

CarrieAnne 12-20-2010 05:32 AM

I think its SO sad. Even way out in the country here we have to lock everything up!

pittsburgpam 12-20-2010 06:52 AM

I would normally not put the sign up but these deliveries are Christmas presents. What is my goal? To get the presents for my family or to catch a thief? It's more important to me to get the Christmas presents.

The laptop won't be visible. I have a box to put over it to keep the cat off of it and I will close the blinds behind the camera.

arbed31 12-20-2010 06:56 AM

That is sad. I hope you get them on video. A friend of my family had left her house to go shopping. When she returned, a thief was running out of her house with her tv under his arm and almost knocked her down. She identified him but now she does not feel safe in her own home.

mic-pa 12-20-2010 06:57 AM

This week someone stole the money from our church which was meantfor the flowers (poinsettas) for the alterfor Christmas. It never ends. the world is certainly different these days and not always good.

kathy 12-20-2010 08:21 AM

I've been seeing almost daily on the news that happening around Houston, this time of year really brings the creeps out and stuff like that just keeps driving the prices up for those of us who actually pay for things

amandasgramma 12-20-2010 08:28 AM

We've thought about getting a camera like that. My friend got one to prove her soon-to-be ex was harrassing her. Yeah, they caught him....trying to reach up thru the cat door to get to the door knob!!!!! Another neighbor was able to catch the kids that were throwing eggs at houses.... :) :)

pittsburgpam 12-20-2010 09:30 AM

I want to get a camera system. I have one infrared one that was hooked up to my PC upstairs but I had problems with it. I've looked at whole packages at electronics stores, need to seriously start evaluating what would suit my needs.

Carron 12-20-2010 09:44 AM

Well, perhaps a box equiped with the hot wires that are used on fences (they give a jolt but not leathol) would be a surprise for the low life person who insists that they may take what ever when ever they please.

Be sure to place a sign that reads "DO NOT TOUCH". If they choose to ignore the sign, oh well. It is a "what part of "DO NOT TOUCH" do you not understand?

jbud2 12-20-2010 10:04 AM

We used my husband's 'game camera' to catch who was spilling the cat food bucket out in the barn. One night is was an opossum, the next it was a BIG raccoon! We keep the food now inside a locked room!

franie 12-20-2010 10:15 AM

Awful to have to live like that.

ljsunflower 12-20-2010 10:16 AM

these kinds of things will get more prevalent as the economy tanks even further. People are stealing anything they think they can sell or hock at a pawn shop. Whether they are still buying drugs with the money or food for their families is another discussion.

Treasureit 12-20-2010 10:18 AM

We are living in tough times for many. But theft is never the answer! I wonder what they will make with fabric???? They are probably very disappointed.

pittsburgpam 12-20-2010 10:41 AM

The fabric probably got dumped somewhere when they saw what it was. It was about $60 worth.

pookie ookie 12-20-2010 11:08 AM

Purchase a sign that says something like, "This property is monitored by security cameras." for future use.

In my neighborhood, when the porch thefts started, they were quickly followed by break-ins. We have Marine Corps and Army stickers on our windows and vehicles. We were the only ones never bothered. My neighbors with a fancy security system had a break-in.

When I was a kid, it was neighborhood teens who did the break-ins. Now, it's adult meth-heads who ride their bikes through neighborhoods all day long scouting. We also have home invasion robberies because there's a university nearby. That's not the meth-heads. That's jilted dealers hitting the wrong house.

What a wonderful world! Hope your packages remain unmolested and you get your Christmas gifts.

Aunt Patti 12-20-2010 11:12 AM

I have had the happen here what nervesame

pittsburgpam 12-20-2010 11:31 AM

I have one small item coming today but the delivery for Wednesday is a big one from Kohl's. I get off work at 2:00pm on Wednesday so I hope to be home. My deliveries are almost always after 4:00pm, they always leave a hub that is about a half hour from me that covers a lot of area.

I don't believe in warnings. Just do it.

I wouldn't warn them either. If they are stealing, you know they are desparate. Just think what that already desparate person would do if they knew they were being caught by camera. They would destroy the camera and the window to the camera, then you would have no way of catching them.
I swear, I really don't know whats wrong with people. It seems like the holidays are always worse for stealing. I guess its just too hard to actually earn money to purchase stuff, when you could just steal it....... Shesh....... stealing packages right off someones porch. I hope you catch them, be sure to let us know.

pittsburgpam 12-20-2010 12:34 PM

I hope it's just the kids in the neighborhood and it will deter them. Before she moved my neighbor used to get my packages after one was stolen and with another one she saw the boys on my porch. She shoo'd them away and got the package.

Ditto on this. If they don't know they're being filmed the police might be able to find them. If found you might get items or money for items back. If they see your note with camera...... glass breaks easily and all they would have to do is follow the wires. With no note they might not see your camera. Best wishes.

barefoot quilter 12-20-2010 12:48 PM

i hate that why do some people do things like that it is just wrong sorry you are going through that i hope all things come out right and hope you have a merry christmas and a wonderfull new year
we are sending you hope and caring
and hope that little not will stop them from doing that again

pittsburgpam 12-20-2010 12:55 PM

Like I said before... I want the Christmas gifts, not just to catch them. I can do the camera again without any warning but for right now, I'd rather get my packages. If it wasn't specifically gifts that I would have to go out within 2 days and replace, then I wouldn't do the note.

AngieS 12-20-2010 01:01 PM

That is terrible that you even have to do this. I was too thinking that someone may take your computer too! Good luck w/catching them!

Do you have anyone, a niece, nephew, relative that could come over and wait for your mail?

AngieS 12-20-2010 01:01 PM

This way too if they are there then the person won't even be tempted to come onto your porch!

watterstide 12-21-2010 03:23 AM

my friends husband made a box for the porch for packages..it looks like a cooler. the ups guy must have a motorcycle, because if he sees the return address as a parts place, he puts in behind the fence! lol

plainpat 12-21-2010 03:29 AM

I thought the same...
