table cloth pattern

Last year I bought a pretty piece of Fall fabric. I would like to make a table cover but I don't know what to do with it. I thought about sliced layer cake, but it is really too pretty to cut up that much. Any suggestions?

Maybe use the table cloth for the focal point and build around it that way your not cutting the table cloth all up yet your adding more fall colors. Hope this helps a little

I had a beautiful piece of falling leaves, orange, red, brown, etc that I made into a simple tablecloth with gold trim on the edges. I kept looking at it and just saw leaves and colors. We used it at a party with friends and in the photographs I finally saw the pattern. It was subtle, but definitely there. Now when I use it I only see the pattern and have to tell myself to appreciate the beauty. So just look from every angle before you start. Also at a sewing class years ago I cut up the most beautiful autumn fabric I ever had to use in quilt blocks. I have regretted that decision ever since. Some pieces are just too good to cut. I brought home several pieces of Hawaiian fabric from a trip there and made a large scale quilt using 12 inch square blocks to keep the patterns in tact.

Maybe use it intact as a table cloth, then add place mats and coasters that pick up the pattern, but also have some solids. They would compliment the table cloth. I would feel so bad if you cut this and then decided you made a mistake.

Thanks everyone. I'm still looking at it. I may just add a border of the main colors around it.

Try the 10 minute table runner. It leaves the main fabric intact.

I agree; don't cut into the fabric until you're sure you can't use it whole. I like the idea of lace or trim on the edges to frame the cloth.

A lot of times I buy fabric when I see (love) it and just hem it.

OKay, I am thinking I will add a border. I have several pieces of fabric that I like with the print. What kind of border would you use? I have seen a checker board pattern plus I've looked on "Quilter's Cache" and their border rec's. Any ideas here? My piece is only I believe a couple of yards so it will not cover my table well enough to just hem.
