My Dr. told me to start taking vitamin D every day a few months ago. He gave me a shot of Vitamin D first. I didn't feel bad before but I have a much better feeling good feeling now. And I have noticed I sleep better. I take 20,000 units a day sometimes more if I'm not out in the sun for any length of time. I buy the 5,000 unit gel caps. I've been reading about Vitamin D studies and it's really amazing. Kids who don't play outside in the sun for a few hours every day need lots of vitamin D. Teens need a lot of it along with calcium. No adverse reactions to Vitamin D has ever been reported. It's cheap so ask your Dr. if it will benefit you to take Vitamin D.

bjnicholson 08-20-2010 11:49 AM

According to my dermatologist, never, never go out without sunscreen.

craftybear 08-20-2010 11:56 AM

thanks for the information!

Maggiesmom 08-20-2010 12:00 PM

My Dr. also put me on Vitamin D in mid winter and it did wonders for my energy levels. I was suffering from the mid winter blues and didn't want to do much of anything. He started me on Vitamin D and B12 shots once a month and I am like a different person.

belmer 08-20-2010 12:00 PM

My Doctor has told me the same thing, Taking vitamin D is one of the best things you can do for your body, besides eating the proper foods. I have been taking vitamin D gel cap's for two years now.

BellaBoo 08-20-2010 12:01 PM

My Dr.'s info and what I have read, if you do not have problems from the sun, it's okay to go without sunscreen for 15 min. That's enough time to get a lot of Vitamin D. But it's easy to just to take Vitamin D if you have to use sunscreen. Sunscreen blocks Vitamin D. I think natural sunlight is the pure stuff so I try to get 15 mins a day in it with at least 20% of my skin exposed to the sun. I do keep my face protected. Don't need anymore wrinkles.

Central Ohio Quilter 08-20-2010 12:12 PM

After I started taking vitamin D my asthma improved considerably.

boxerlady 08-20-2010 01:14 PM

My DH's doctor suggested that he start taking vitamin D. Much research has been done, it seems to help with many conditions

annyroony2 08-20-2010 02:54 PM

My doctor just put me on vitamin D also and I thought I got plenty of sun!

lots2do 08-20-2010 03:03 PM

I started taking it last summer after reading about the benefits in Prevention magazine. I am not taking as much as you are but I do feel much better 'on' it than not. Last summer up here in New England, we had a very rainy July and that was part of my motivation to try it out.

I need to get my vitamin d level tested nest time i go to the doc.

craftiladi 08-20-2010 03:43 PM

Hmmm interesting topic.....just one of the reasons I love reading this board.

nativetexan 08-20-2010 04:03 PM

hmmm, i take vitamin D with my calcium.

sasseyib 08-20-2010 04:19 PM

I was taking 5000 IU of Vitamin D every day and the doctor told me, after blood work was done, to stop taking it every day and only take it twice a week.

CajunQuilter2 08-20-2010 04:22 PM

Funny this topic should come about. My dr just put me on Vitamin D as well because my bloodwork came back showing my D level was low. Have not gotten it filled yet, but I will tomorrow. I can use all the energy I can get....

MISHNJIM 08-20-2010 04:25 PM

I am also taking Vitamin D and don't feel a difference at all. I work at a doctor's office and it seems that everyone is taking this now. I do have to admit that I don't go outside as much as I use to.

AnnaK 08-20-2010 05:48 PM

My doctor also put me on a Vit D. therapy. I don't play in the sun but I also don't stay indoors a lot so I asked him how come so many people are deficient nowadays and he told me that they've upped the minimun daily requirement; they found people need more of it. So now I take a multi vitamin for seniors (yes, I'm going to be graduating soon), calcium and Vit D. I do feel pretty good. thanks for posting this.

littlehud 08-20-2010 06:05 PM

I need to start taking it. Anything that will help.

Lisanne 08-20-2010 06:11 PM

I tested low for Vitamin D a couple of years ago, and the doctor put me on 50,000 once a week for a month. That brought me up to the lowest end of normal.

She didn't say a thing about the benefits of taking it other than bone health.

Last year, another doctor said I was supposed to keep taking it as a daily supplement (whatever the usual daily dose is). She retested me and I was still just barely in the normal range.

I have it, and I'm going to take it right now.

Honey 08-20-2010 06:35 PM

DH and I also take it and it has made such a difference. We both feel better and have a better outlook and neither of us has been sick since we started. That includes colds. I think it makes all of the difference.

amandasgramma 08-20-2010 07:36 PM

Well, I can't take it!!! Makes me sick to my stomach...no matter which one I take or how much. SO, my doc said to go out without sunscreen for at least 10 minutes a day....that worked!!!

pookie ookie 08-20-2010 07:41 PM

If you have a possible sarcoidosis diagnosis, do not take vitamin D without first discussing it with your fave specialist.

icon17 08-20-2010 07:42 PM

You also need calcium with it or vit D with cal for it to absorb 8-)

Jingle 08-20-2010 09:58 PM

I found during the winter with lack of sunshine, if I took Vit. D and taking Calicum W/ D I didn't have the low energy I had without it. I did decide to stop taking the extra and not getting much sun I feel sluggish, maybe I need to start taking it again.

earthwalker 08-20-2010 10:21 PM

Glad you are all finding benefits from Vit. D. If you have any health conditions/take medication of any description, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking vitamin supplements, or herbal remedies.

ConnieF 08-20-2010 11:27 PM

I take 2 drops every day I remember it... and have been giving to my dh too....

catlady506 08-21-2010 03:44 AM

I have been taking vitamin D too. Once a week I also take a megadose prescribed by my doctor. It plays major in your energy levels. I feel great!

sueisallaboutquilts 08-21-2010 05:11 AM

Bella, my doctor also prescribed it for me. I just have to remember to take it!!
This summer has been so beastly hot that I've been inside more than usual.
So thanks for the reminder :D

starlight 08-21-2010 05:14 AM

I have been taking 50,000 units every fifth day and 2000 units on all the other days. I go off for a while and felt the difference. Regular bloodwork shows that I keep my level at an acceptable level.

keesha_ont 08-21-2010 05:16 AM

From what I have read Doctor's are prescribing vitamin D a lot to people nowadays. A recent report in Canada stated that the cost of testing for vitamin D levels has increased significantly to the point where they don't want to do anymore testing. However, my doctor also prescribed vitamin D for me as he said my body isn't absorbing it from the sun....

Gramma B 08-21-2010 05:32 AM

My doc also told me to take Vitamin D; I'm not so tired anymore.

grannypat7925 08-21-2010 06:21 AM

I used to have an issue with periodic depression. I now take 2000 units of Vit. D every day and have noticed a huge difference. I rarely find myself being depressed anymore.

pieces 08-21-2010 06:36 AM

My doctor said to take vitamin D3 (5,000IU) because it helps the absorbtion of the calcium, which I also take.
He also said to take Vitamin K2 for the same reason.
These are taken daily. Since women have a problem with osteoporosis these will help our body to absorb more of the calcium. A urine test will show how much your body is absorbing and how much is being lost in urine.

quilter68 08-21-2010 06:43 AM

About two years ago I was diagnosed with RA. The RA Dr. took tests and gave me a script for 50,000 units a day...of Vit.D. (Yes, 50,000 units a day. I was that low.) One capsule and I was sewing instead of napping!

I am now on maintenance of 1,000 units a day and doing fine. I do have Arthritis but not that bad.

Amazing difference one little vitamin made.

damaquilts 08-21-2010 06:46 AM

My doc just did blood tests and said I needed Vit D too.He called in a prescription but I can't afford to get it filled so I am just going to take OTC D I have already. Hopefully it will work as well.

Just realize that a prescription may be for 50,000 units and the OTC pill may only be 400 units. That's quite a difference, so don't expect anywhere near the same effect. Maybe you could take a couple of pills a day, at least.

As for not being able to afford it, some supermarket pharmacies are filling generics and such for only a small fee, $10 or less. It can't hurt to go in an ask the pharmacist if there's any way he can help you.

2manyprojects 08-21-2010 10:53 AM

I also take D, always deficient when I get a blood test, although Dr. only said 2,000 for me...

mary quite contrary 08-21-2010 10:57 AM

I was also told to take vitamin D and spend 15 minutes every day in the sun without sunscreen. Then put on the sunscreen!

Mt Glory 08-21-2010 11:32 AM

My Mom has alzeimers & her Dr. recommeded vitamin D cause it helps with memory as well.

maggiek 08-21-2010 11:43 AM

My doctor said my D was very low and said I should take it every day with my calcium/D combo. The symptom I'm looking to fix is leg and foot cramps that often get me up at night. She said it should work. I thought cramps came from low calcium and or magnesium so this was news to me. Started today.
