Does everyone have their taxes filed yet?
I just got mine finished. UGH! Hate doing taxes!!
I always wait until the last minute. I figure if I'm getting a refund, I've waited this long for the money, I can wait a little longer. If I've got to pay, THEY can wait until the LAST minute to get it from me! lol
But, this year we are getting money back, thanks to a HUGE moving expense we were able to claim. We always split the refund....1/3 for me, 1/3 for hubby and 1/3 on the biggest owed credit card, which this year, will be paid off by the refund. :):):)

MollieSue 04-11-2009 06:23 AM

We always do ours as soon as possibel to get the money quickest! I wish they'd figure out a way to get a refund twice a year! lol!!! :-)

Oh, that would be nice...twice a year! lol
We are fortunate that we don't need the money back quickly. We used to because it would pay off Christmas bills!
Now, we are in a "good" place in our life where we can pretty much do as we please with whatever we get back. I just don't like paying!!!

Maride 04-11-2009 06:28 AM

I did mine back in February. I got my refund a long time ago and put it away for a rainy day and that was a good thing because we have had a lot of rainy days. The very same day I got my state refund I got out of work and popped a tire on the highway. A co-worker came to my rescue (I can do it, but my car is 1 year old and never had the tires touched, so it was too tight) and changed my tire. After that, off to Sears to spend half of my refund on two new tires. Just the way I wanted to spend my money!!

My taxes are done, refund received and spent

Still waiting on my state refund -- they never get in a hurry to send you your money but get quite insistent if you owe

tlrnhi 04-11-2009 06:29 AM

It always happens that way. You THINK you are ahead, but nope.....out it goes!!

Mplsgirl 04-11-2009 06:32 AM

We did ours early, too. Good thing because I was laid off and it came in handy.

Piedmont Quilter 04-11-2009 06:55 AM

Filed our taxes on 3/2/09. Got the federal refund on 3/13/09. Still have not seen the refund from the state of NC. Something about the state is running out of money and they are processing refunds as they have the money. Now - if I owed and and did not pay by 4/15/09, would they charge me interest? ABSOLUTLY!!!!!! But they own me and not going to pay me interest - just using the tax payer as a bank. Wish I could move to a state that does not have state income tax ~ ~ but I like living in NC too much to make that drastic a change.

We did ours but haven't mailed .. WHY you ask well you guessed it.. we OWE big time.... right at 4 thousand.... And of course my husband got bit by the economy bug and got the axe from his job!

That is why we are in the fabulous state of VA living with good ole MOM!

Love OBAMA.. HATE TAXES!

shaverg 04-11-2009 07:58 AM

Always file ours the end of Feb. or 1st of March. Already got our refunds from Fed and state. Good thing we had to replace the hybrid battery in our car, can you say expensiveeeeeeee. I heard California was going to give IOUs, but we got our refund, maybe because of the Stimulus Pkg, who knows. I am not complaining.

Jim's Gem 04-11-2009 09:31 AM

I work for an accountant and did not get my taxes to them until the 25th of March. I told them that we don't mind if they extend us. We still have (as of 3pm yesterday) 160 returns to do by Wednesday. There will be quite a few that we will extend. We also have clients that will call us Wednesday afternoon and say "extend me" and then show up on the 14th of October to bring in their stuff expecting it to be finished the next day!!!!
Dh and I had pulled it all out in early February to get the paperwork together but didn't find a number and just put it away and sort of "forgot" about it. I didn't forget, since I deal with tax returns all day every day, but dh didn't want to have to figure out some of our home repairs we did. We shouldn't owe anything.

Barbm 04-11-2009 11:33 AM

Our accountant saves us for end of March. We have to pay in- hubby forgot to take off the dependent we lost last year. How can you forget to do that? It's not that bad but I wish we got money back. He has told HR that our son graduated college and is working full time now.

Guess I better adopt some kids.

Ninnie 04-11-2009 12:03 PM

We have a standing appointment on April 15th at 5:00 Have had for years! LOL

sewhappy57 04-11-2009 12:55 PM

Hubby does taxes for a living, all I ever see is sign here! LOL

ButtercreamCakeArtist 04-11-2009 01:05 PM

We received ours in February and are building 2 rooms on to our house with it...well, part of it...it wasn't enough.

sewjoyce 04-11-2009 01:38 PM

I think I'm gonna get my cat a social security number so I can claim him as a dependent...

I've thought about that before. Have heard stories of people who have done that, but eventually got caught! lol

amma 04-11-2009 03:15 PM

One year where I worked, a gentleman brought in his taxes....2 BIG boxes of receipts, April 15th at 5:30pm. No way could he have missed the BIG sign she had on the door: CLOSING AT 6:00PM  We always closed at 6:00pm sharp on the 15th :? I went and asked my boss what she wanted me to tell him and she said tell him we will do it but it will be an extra $200  thinking that he would say no way and leave. He said ok, that's fine and so we had to stay until almost midnight getting his return filed on time   I was not happy about it....(neither was he having to come in and sign his return  but then she gave the $200 to me as a bonus :D :D :D

I also work as a freelance bookkeeper. Prior to public accounting, I was the queen of extensions. NO MORE! I have found it to be less stressful on me and my CPA to have everything to them in early February. If I have money coming back, I can file right away. If I have to pay, I set it up to file early, and pay electronically on April 15th. The reduction in stress is worth it.

With my bookkeeping clients, I don't do their federal taxes (no state taxes in WA), but we do have their stuff done early. In 2008, I had a new client that always complained that I was too early in the month for his monthly sales tax reports. I finished his stuff on the 14th. And broke my wrist that night. When I saw him a month later, his attitude totally changed. "You come see me anytime you want. I realize how close that was to having to do my own bookwork."

I think Tinkerbelle should have one. After all she owns the house and me!!!And with the cost at the VET, we should be able to take off her medical bills also.....

Terri, You get to take off Big Boy don't you???

beachlady 04-11-2009 03:55 PM

Being retired and poor helps! And all my meducal bills this year and the high taxes here on the beach helped too! No taxes owed for me!! Wasn't sure I even had to file since I didn't give them any money this year and owed nothing, but I mailed them all the correct paperwork anyway.

quiltnut4ever 04-11-2009 04:05 PM

Just did mine with Turbo Tax and I owed, :( :( :( soooo they'll get their money sent out exactly on the 15th!

littlehud 04-11-2009 06:53 PM

Filed mine the first part of Feb. and got the refunds fast. Paid the taxed on the house and had a little left over. My kids talked me into buying some fabric and EQ6 with what was left. (OK, it didn't take much convincing. Tee Hee)

Janstar 04-11-2009 08:41 PM

DH finished ours today and everything is signed, sealed and we'll deliver it late April 15th since we owe. Wonder if we could ask not to pay our taxes this year like half of Washington DC did.

MadQuilter 04-11-2009 08:52 PM

We got ours done yesterday (H&R Block). We are actually getting money back. That's a first in years.

CindyBee 04-12-2009 01:47 AM

DH is self employed, so we pay quarterly according to an estimate. Our accountant calls me and reminds me to bring everything in each quarter. She does that because one year I brought 6 months at a time. I'll never do that again!

I'd love to take him off on my taxes. Just food alone for the year is almost $1200!!
But, I just LOVE it when we move! I do get to deduct the cats. They go under Moving Expenses. I can claim their vet bills, health certificates AND their flights! WOOHOO!! lol

Marcia 04-12-2009 06:30 PM

Pete always waits until the night of April 14th to sit down and Turbo our taxes. We owe and so we wait until the 15th to write that check to the IRS.

sharon b 04-12-2009 06:35 PM

Filed mine back in January.. Used part of it for my flight to Vegas and holding a few bucks back just in case..In this economy you just never know anymore  But a couple years I had to pay and trust me I was in line at the post office at 11:30 pm.. wasn't gonna rush to pay them

Cathe 04-13-2009 05:26 AM

I always do ours fairly early, because we need to do that before I can file the FAFSA for my college students!

We try to make sure we are not paying in more than we owe them -- no point in giving the government a free loan. As someone else said, they would expect interest from us if we didn't pay it right away, but they hang on to our "overpayment" all year without paying a penny of interest to us.

MCH 04-13-2009 01:10 PM

Speaking of taxes...some of which are, but many are implemented at the federal, state, and local levels under the guise of "fees".

The "fee" I have to pay to the city for the dog license is NOT a fee. It's a TAX for having a dog.

The "fee" I pay to the city for a piece of paper to put near my front door, stating I've paid the city fee for having a whole-house alarm is a TAX! (The Chief of Police has publicly said officers will no longer respond to burglar alarms unless someone verifies, first, that a burglary is in progess...you don't even want to hear what I think about him and THAT!)

The"fee" I pay to the State of CA Dept. of Motor Vehicles to register my car is a TAX because I own a car. I'm still trying to figure out what actual service the DMV provides to citizens. It all looks like overhead to me.

Think about all those "fees" you play, folks.

Here's my thought on how to mitigate that. It's very simple, really.

Let's start a national movement to have election day changed from the first Tuesday in November to April 16. How do you think that change would impact the political campains...be they local, state, or federal.

As it is, the November elections occur almost 6 month to the day after April 15. If folks were to vote the day after they had paid their taxes, the politicians wouldn't be able to lie, cheat, trot out their smoke and mirrors' economic packages, and be able to convince a majority of the electorate that others aren't paying enough in taxes or paying their "fair share".

The pain of the tax would be all to fresh in folks' minds and they would vote accordingly, not having been lulled by smooth and targeted political rhetoric that promises to take care of everyone's problems!

Two-hundred and thirty-three years ago (1776) we had just ended a revolution protesting taxes that are miniscule in comparison to what gets sucked out of our pockets today!

Just think about what political campaigns and their immediate and long range costs would be to Americans if election day were April 16.

IMHO

I changed my withholdings so I always owe taxes. I guess a refund would be nice but I put money in a savings account every month. So I'm earning interest on the money that I'm not giving to the state until tax day.

sewjoyce 04-13-2009 01:26 PM

MCH: Yep, change Election Day to April 16th!!!

Chele 04-13-2009 01:36 PM

I agree with Cathe. Adjust your withholdings so the government doesn't hold your money all year long. Put the extra money in something that will pay interest. Or at the very least, reduce and eliminate any debt you may have. I wish there was a flat tax. It would be so much easier. This is a stressful time of year for so many people.

bearpaw 04-14-2009 06:00 AM

I've worked in a CPA's office for the past 22 years. I am just about to crawl under the covers and sleep for a week. One more day!!!!!

hpylady 04-15-2009 11:53 AM

MCH.........Very well said  You've got my vote....April 16th.

nativetexan 04-15-2009 01:21 PM

butterflywing 04-15-2009 02:06 PM
