ten new dolls for sick kids (1 with quilted skirt)

the white is the inside 'topsy-turvy' part of the doll.. ...the boy turns front to back for his sleepy face. These make dolls 101 through 109 for kids to be given away to a child with a devestating medical problem. I hope you enjoy seeing them. The boy doll needed his shirt pulled away as it is supposed to fit 'loose', not shaped to a waistline. ggl

They are just adorable. Kudos to you for such a wonderful effort!

wordpaintervs 05-22-2012 04:50 PM

thanks to all of you for taking the time to view the dolls and to reply. I appreciate it. It comforts me to make something that will perhaps bring peace and hope to a child in trouble with their health.
One of the latest to get a doll just turned 3, today she got a trach put in her throat and a feeding tube in her stomach. She had a tumor around her brain stem they couldn't completely remove. The remaining tumor is headed into her spine. They will be doing radiation therapy 5 days a week for 5 weeks. The parents and her are both struggling to get through all this. The child is from Minnesota.

What a wonderful way to give to the community. I wish the little boy that I take back and forth to the hospital would be old enough for a doll. I just brought him and the parents home on Sat. and I heard last night that he was taken back to the hospital. I think he is only 12 weeks old now. Holes in the heart, esophagus, probably blind and deaf too, feeding tube etc.

Caswews 05-23-2012 03:19 AM

Really cute and such a nice thing for you to do. I have made a few dolls and hate the stuffing part, so cudos to you for the fortitude to do all that stuffing. Take care.

wordpaintervs 05-23-2012 10:15 AM

OH MY GOODNESS...that poor little guy. I will certainly put him in my prayers, even without a name....and his parents as well. My heart goes out to these children. Hugs for what you do to help them.

IF the time ever comes, when I run out of the cash in my non-profit checking account for my Dolls For Sick Kids, I may consider having to sell a doll or so, now and then, for money to replenish the account for the supplies that aren't donated and that I run out of from time to time. So far, haven't had to do a great deal of that, but when I mail the dolls, it costs me $20 plus per doll. (Dolls are large and require my 'buying a mailing box'. It costs $25 to $30 per girl doll for fabric and trim (outdoor dresses I have fabric for at this point...other then trims) if I don't have the fabrics to begin with, and at least $15 for the dolls. For the girls it takes 12 to 16 hours of work to complete each one. IF I have to resort to selling any of the dolls, I'd have to include the postage in the dolls prices. At my age of almost 72, I hope that will not become a necessity. Used to be it was all out of pocket, and there were much less dolls given, but thanks to overwhelming generosity in some cash and fabric, trim donations, 100 dolls have already found a home with a child to love. Please understand, I am not asking for help, and just showing the overall picture. Ladies continue to help and myself and the 'mothers' and father/brothers to these dolls appreciate all that is being done on their behalf. You are the angels to support and encourage as you do, and I am grateful to be able to still make these dolls. Thanks to all of you out there.

QM 05-23-2012 10:28 AM

Those are real sweeties! Good for you.

wordpaintervs 05-23-2012 04:02 PM

thanks QM. I am glad you liked them. Today one of your quilt forum ladies honored me with a package full of blue jeans and overall,s shirts and hoodies, for the boy dolls, plus trim and ribbons for the girls. The package came today. I am so grateful for the love out there. Wish I could give everyone a big hug on behalf of the kids (girl and boy dolls) or better yet, wish the kids that get them could give you all a big hug. Thanks for the encouragement.

They are just too cute.

Thanks to you for your replies. Having finished these 9, am going to kind of rest my hands a couple days, then do some partial sewing on doll dresses and doll bodys (I have 15 girl bodys to sew up) then cut more fabric out, so when I want to start decorating the skirts on the dresses and getting bodys stuffed, it will go faster for me. I am not one to organize well, but I am trying. 2 ladies at my little church have my remaining white fabric and will cut out nightgowns for me, ao that is a great help as well. Five out of state ladies have requested a doll pattern kit to sew themselves for the VERY sick kids, so that is wonderful and warms the heart to know more kids will be helped by them. You guys are wonderful. For a long time, it was only me to put the dolls together, and the dolls moved slower, now help comes from all around, and more kids are helped. I appreciate you all more than my words can say. Thanks.

God will reward you for making those children smile when they get your beautiful gift. You are special:)

wordpaintervs 05-24-2012 08:46 PM

Thanks Nagi. Several woman now (hopefully) have asked for a doll kit pattern and promised to make a doll for a minimum of 1 VERY sick child. It encourages me to send them out and hope more kids get one, now then I alone could supply.

JNCT14 05-25-2012 03:49 AM

These are great. I have a thread going about comfort dolls for battered women (or whereever they might be of use) that is being sponsored by SewNews. Ya gotta love us quilters - we are truly community minded!

wordpaintervs 05-25-2012 09:48 AM

can you please post a link to that for the battered woman in a PM for me? I'd love to read about it. Two of my dolls went to a local shelter for the children who come with their battered mother, to play with, if they wish, while their mother is getting couseling to help out. Earlier this year, we took new and donated stuffed toys to the shelter for each child to have, till they run out. (Over 100 I think that were all new)

thanks
