You start knitting at the toe instead of from the top cuff.

Google toe up traveler sox. I'm doing them with "afterthought" heels as an expiement. The pattern has short row heels. Cats sweet tomato shortnrow heels are a good method if you want to do them that way.

icon17, socks can be knitted from the top down or from the toe up. It's a difference primarily for the knitter and not very noticeable for the person who will be wearing them, unless he or she knows how to knit.
