We are just getting over a scary emergency room visit where my son had something lodged in his throat while having a family BBQ. An emergency room visit identified the foreign object. It was the wire from the brush to clean the grill. He had to have surgery to have it removed. After arriving home I searched on the internet for similar stories and found it to be quite common with very frightening stories. DO NOT CLEAN YOUR GRILL WITH WIRE BRUSHES. He is now OK and recuperating.

Sadiemae 06-27-2011 03:53 PM

WOW! I hope your son feels better really soon. That is very scary.

hannajo 06-27-2011 03:53 PM

TonnieLoree 06-27-2011 06:10 PM

Boy, sorry about that! What did he do; try to brush his teeth or "lick" the sauce?

littlehud 06-27-2011 06:11 PM

My brush is in the garbage. Thanks for the heads up.

pinecone 06-27-2011 06:17 PM

No. Before grilling he scraped it clean with the wire brush. Tiny pieces of the wire break off and stay on the grill. These wire pieces are nearly invisible and stick to your food. They get stuck in your esophagus like thorns.

I wondered how you could no see a bristle. Didn't realize they broke off in little bits. Glad he's getting better.

Painiacs 06-27-2011 07:00 PM

dixiebelle162002 06-27-2011 07:07 PM

alikat110 06-27-2011 07:25 PM

Thanks for the warning. Husband won't like it, but it is trash in am.

Carron 06-27-2011 08:16 PM

Oh my, so sorry to lhear this news. Glad your son is all right.

jaciqltznok 06-27-2011 08:36 PM

that is why the suggest you HOSE off the grate before cooking on it after you clean it!

SOS pads do the same thing...

Katia 06-27-2011 09:43 PM

That is so scary. Our grill has parts that come off to clean. I have even put them in the dishwasher. We do have a brush, but it never gets used. My DH uses a ball of aluminum foil. It works great for cleaning most any grill, better then a brush.

wanda lou 06-27-2011 09:45 PM

wow so glad he is fine.

mountain deb 06-28-2011 05:16 AM

WOW, something so innocent turned tragic. Thanks for the warning. The silver lining to this is---1. he is okay and 2. you warned us. Thank you.

Owllady 06-28-2011 05:23 AM

Thanks for the wakeup call.

countrycottage 06-28-2011 06:16 AM

SparkMonkey 06-28-2011 06:38 AM

OMG!!! That made me gag. UGH. I'm glad he's on the mend. Owie owie owie.

I was considering getting a wire brush for our grill, but no way am I doing that now. I'll just continue washing it in the sink with steel wool and following up with a cloth. Thank you for the warning!

Just Me... 06-28-2011 08:00 AM

That's scary. Glad he is OK now.

Iamquilter 06-28-2011 08:31 AM

Glad your son is o'k and thanks for the warning.

Claddaughquilting 06-28-2011 08:56 AM

Thank you for the warning! I never thought of it, and we use those wire brushes ALOT! No more! Glad to hear your son is OK. Thanks again!
