I'm just curious as to what everyone has named their sewing machines? Please share your names with the message board and also why or how did you come about naming it that?

I'm trying to think of a name for mine and I'm thinking about naming her "Florance Ida Katherine" after my mother.

And does anyone refer to their sewing machine as a "he" ?

earthwalker 06-22-2011 07:42 PM

I have named my 40'/50's era Pinnock "Jasper"....so I'm guessing he is a he:). My boss, years ago, an elderly gent, was really into computers and every time his computer didn't do something he wanted it to do he'd say "C'mon Jasper". It stuck in my head, so when I started learning to machine quilt and I hit a glitch or mucked up I just started saying "C'mon Jasper", so Jasper it is. I bought a treadle at the end of last year (which Jasper is sitting on 'til I restore it). Don't know if I will name it, but if I do, I'll wait 'til I can work out its "personality". Generally I do not name things that aren't sentient beings...quilting has changed that I 'spose.

Just named my first machine. I have a Serger, Singer, Pfaff, and Bernina. Just got a Bernina 830LE so I named her Elly. :-) I will be getting two more Berninas and have already picked their names, Frances & Esther. They will be named after my grandmas!

nursie76 06-22-2011 08:47 PM

My goodness! Well, here are the ones I remember off the top of my head:

My Bernina 830 LE is Ruby (she has a red face plate and is a gem)
My Bernina 330 is Eva
My Brother CS4000 is Baby Brother
My Singer Futura is Jaleesa
My treadle is Sadie...I think...Gosh, I guess when you forget their names, you have too many...naw!

miss_ticky2 06-22-2011 08:50 PM

I don't usually name mine either..but I did name my featherweight Felicity :)

Painiacs 06-22-2011 10:43 PM

Tussymussy 06-23-2011 02:16 AM

Stunned. am I missing something? Is my brain odd? I have never, ever thought of naming any of my machines. Probably called the Serger some unprintable things when it does not want to co-operate tho!

LOL..My thoughts exactly!! I have 3 non-working older machines and my new one that I don't jive with too well, so naming is not a good idea here!

Riversong 06-23-2011 03:42 AM

My main machine is named Aurelia, after my great grandmother who was an excellent seamstress and quilter.I in herited her genes ,I think,as no one else in my family can even sew on a button. My oldest daughter has "The Needle" that she keeps around as she has three boys and must deal with splinters. It has never passed through a piece of fabric or a button.

brushandthimble 06-23-2011 03:56 AM

I have named only my FW "Lizzie"

mltquilt 06-23-2011 04:02 AM

Never named my machines until I purchased my Bernina Series 8 830 machine. I call her Bertha or Big Bertha because of the size.

Just Me... 06-23-2011 04:02 AM

My Bernina is "Bernie"
My Janome is "Jenny"
My Featherweight is "Flossie"
My Gammills are "Gammie and Gabbie"
Two Singers are "Sylvia and Sylvester" (just gave these away)

I know....I'm not as creative with these names. I started naming them when I heard a news report that said people who name their cars take better care of them. Figured it would apply to the sewing machines, too.

Now....to name the rest.....LOL

RUSewing 06-23-2011 04:44 AM

The only one I've named is my Singer 66 and it's Lucille - after my granny who was my sewing mentor and other mother.

MissSandra 06-23-2011 05:18 AM

I named my treadle Debie due to her owner previous owner whos passed on and my bff is debbie also.

Conniequilts 06-23-2011 05:26 AM

Wow - some creative names! i just named my recent purchase Blue. It is a Sapphire and, well, sapphires are blue.

traumaRN 06-23-2011 05:28 AM

My Janome is Janette, for obvious reasons; and my fw is Velma Genevive (Genny) after my grandmother who was a quilter and my inspiration.

tlcquiltnut 06-23-2011 05:37 AM

My new Designer Diamond has no name as of yet but the Big Bopper greets me when she turns on.
My sapphire is Saffy
Treadle is Myrtle(after my grandmother)
The featherwieght needs named too come to think...gee I better get busy thinking up names....

Buckeye Rose 06-23-2011 05:48 AM

Oh my! the only names I call my machine are not printable! and that is when it misbehaves and causes me great frustration.

cctx. 06-23-2011 01:49 PM

Kenmore Vintage: Betty
301A Singer Long-bed: Mocha Chocolata Yah, Yah
401A Singer/Cabinet: Baby

It's just that these machines each seem to have their own personalities...this one is fussy about this...that one refuses to do that...can't let anything with a personality go without a name! LOL

granma1 06-24-2011 03:52 PM

My featherweight is painted Plum Crazy purple , so her name is Mrs. Peacock after the lady in the Clue game. My big Singer is Queenie , because she is the boss of the sewing room and so very beautiful. My others don't have names yet.

Charlee,
I agree, that is why I name the machines. The other vintage machines I haven't had a chance to work with are patiently waiting.
Here is my list of vintage machines that I use:

Davis NVF #1: Penny
Davis NVF#2: Jade
National Two Spools: Mr. Cowboy
Eldredge Two Spools: Melinda, she is married to Mr. Cowboy
Singer 15-90: Jasmine
Singer 328K: Hank the Tank
Singer 201: Starr
Singer 66-1: Thistle Marie
Singer 66-1: Lily
Singer FW 221: Heather

I love how y'all came up with Ruby and Big Bertha! I was afraid my Elly was going to have her name in common with 3999 other machines. I just figured she would be the only one in my house so I went with it anyway!
Everyone has great names for their machines. I think we name them because we love them like they are our kids. I even buckle mine up when they go for a ride!
