We have an informal library in our home. Books were a great love. But, hubby and I are simplifying and I'd like to get rid of many titles. I started by placing several titles (package deal) pertaining to horses on Craig's List, and then a horse forum. No luck. Several titles have been donated to the local library, but there are many I'd rather sell for at least $5.

Other than sitting at a flea market (they are not romance type books, so I'm not sure that'd be worthwhile)...anyone have an idea?

Other than listing them on craig's list and/or ebay and hoping for the best, I don't know. I donated all my books to our local library and then claimed the tax deduction. The library was very happy and we felt good about that.

You can try posting books on Half.com as they don't charge a fee to list books & they stay listed until you delete the listing. It is easy to post. When you type in a title, the book - ususally has a cover picture - & description already listed. You can see what others are charging for the book. Half.com keeps 15% when a book is sold. They collect a set amount for shipping from the buyer.

Could you be a vendor at horse shows? I never showed horses, but dogs for many years and there were always vendors at dog shows.

My husband and I are simplfiying also we took ours to Half fPice Book store You won't get what they are worth but you will get something. Books are like old cloths you never get what they are worth when you resale as people are looking for a bargain on used stuff and do not expect to pay that much for stuff.

Google "book swap" or something similar.
There are places online where you can list your books for free, and make a wish list of books you'd like to swap them for.
It might take a while for a swap to happen. It all depends on what you are offering and what you're looking for.
But you only pay the postage to them, and they pay postage to you.
Different sites might work a little differently.
I've swapped alot of books at one site and loved it.

I like this idea!! I'd forgotten about the store I used to do this at. I'm wondering if it's still open. I will make another pile for the library (we don't itemize deductions so it doesn't help with taxes--or I'd donate them all) and one for this store, after I check to see if they are still in business. Thanks!

Thats a great idea! I had forgotten all about those stores where you take them in and get credit for 1/2 the price! You can tell i live in a small town where we don't have those types of stores. I used to frequent one where we used to live though. Good luck with them Karla!

It searches up to 44 of the most popular book buying sites on the internet and it tells you which site is offering what price for your book. Some sites do require a minimum.

Book Scouter also has reviews for many of the sites so you can decide for yourself if it is reputable.

Also, some book trading site include:

There are others. With these, you pay for shipping the books to others and the books you request are free to you.

I forgot to mention that Amazon now buys back books, too. But, you get Amazon gift cards. The good things is that Amazon sells tons of stuff, so you could use the gift cards to buy gifts, or even groceries! (It says textbooks, but I have sold them no-textbooks, too.)

Good to hear from you Karla! I, too have too many books of all genres. I have been giving them away to people I think would like them. Most are fiction, but I have tons of books from when I was teaching, and they are more specific. And I still look at books when I visit a thrift store or estate sale. Must learn to stop that and use the library! Let them store them!
