What a Great Idea!!!!

duhhhhh ~ why didn't I think of this one........

I have a friend who used her solar lights inside at night when her current was off during the hurricane. She stuck them in a jar or bottle and said they gave off plenty of 'free light'. She put one in each room and would put them back outside in the daytime and bring them in at night as long as the current was off. They are safe to use and cheaper than batteries. Bring in a solar light one night and test it.

Due to a thunderstorm, we lost power for about 5 hours. We were scrambling around in the darkness, looking for matches, candles, flashlights, etc. We looked outside, and noticed our solar lights shining brightly all around our patio, stairs, dock, etc. They were beautiful. My wife walked outside, and brought several of the solar lights inside.

We stuck the solar light pipes into plastic drink bottles containers and they made the nicest, brightest, safest, lighting you could ever imagine.

We put one in the bathroom, the kitchen, the living room, etc. There was plenty of light. There are all types of solar lights available. We bought ours at Harbor Freight. We put them all around our yard. They look nice and they do not attract flying bugs like the outdoor lights around our doorway.

The lights we have fit into the small (20 oz) water bottles and they also fit into most of the larger liter bottles. If you need a weight in the plastic bottle to keep them from tipping over, you can put a few of the pretty colorful "flat marbles" that they put in aquariums, and vases. (you can also use sand, aquarium gravel, etc., whatever you have available).

The lights we have were perfect inside our home. They burn all night long if you need them.

The next day, you just take your solar lights back outside and they will instantly recharge and be ready for you to use again any time you need them.

Perfect for power outages, hurricanes, etc.

I never thought of it, and now you don't have to. -----

What a great idea. Next time I'm close to Harbor Freight I'm going to buy a few solar lights. Thanks.

DonnaC 07-01-2012 02:17 PM

I'm going to buy some too! Last year a hurricane knocked our power out for 5 days - it was so difficult. This is a great solution!

KwiltyKahy 07-01-2012 03:06 PM

Why didn't I think of that?

chips88 07-01-2012 03:12 PM

great idea . thanks for sharing

barri1 07-01-2012 03:38 PM

I used the solarlights when I had guests.. I didn't feel like buying night lights.. They worked perfectly.. You can also use them when camping out..

Neesie 07-01-2012 03:43 PM

That's a brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing it!!! We have a good many solar lights but I think it'd be a good investment, to get a handful more . . . and maybe a few of the larger ones. :)

TanyaL 07-01-2012 03:45 PM

I loved our solar lights and so did our dog. He chewed them up. They make great chew toys.

Arleners 07-01-2012 04:05 PM

I did that last year when we had a hurricane on Long Island and the power was out. I now have a bouquet of solar liights that I keep on the back patio. Put together, you can even get enough light to read by.

I saw a new product a couple of weeks ago that the lady said she bought at a US Walmart. It was a solar light that fastened onto a mason jar. She had filled the mason jar with the coloured glass pebbles and screwed the solar light cap on the top. I want some but so far I have not been able to find them.:(

MinnieKat 07-01-2012 06:11 PM

I've used them at the cabin ... leave them outside during the day and bring them in at night for night lights.

NikkiLu 07-01-2012 06:31 PM

OMG - fabulous idea!!! We were without power for 11 days due to an ice storm in "07 - was so afraid of our candles and kerosene lamps. Going to buy some solar lamps tomorrow and just store them with the rest of our emergency stuff.

ranbro 07-02-2012 03:49 AM

Now that is certainly using the ole noggin. What a great and cool idea.

Latrinka 07-02-2012 05:56 AM

Wow, that's a bright idea! No pun intended!

thanks ditter living fl that's great to know

Scakes 07-02-2012 04:06 PM

We've used solar lights when the power was off after a hurricane or storm and they work pretty darn good. Much better than sitting in the dark.

AuntieD 07-02-2012 06:14 PM

QVC sells lanterns which use solar energy. Very cute and looked reliable.

DJinSC 07-02-2012 07:28 PM

How clever! I'll remember that!

Cornerstone quilter 07-02-2012 09:35 PM

You can separate the post from the light itself on some of the solar lights and stick the top light part into a pint mason jar or jelly jar or peanut butter jar. I'm trying to find some plastic jars that I can hot glue the light part onto so my grandkids can have rechargeable night lights. Found this on pinterest. Great idea.

AUQuilter 07-03-2012 03:51 AM

Thank you so much for posting this. Always looking for emergency options that are dual duty.

lorimax5859 07-03-2012 05:06 AM

What a great idea! We are planning on doing some camping and as I read your message I thought this would make great camping lighting too!
Thanks for sharing.

caspharm 07-03-2012 05:13 AM

That's a great idea.

LindaJR 07-03-2012 06:14 AM

I have used this idea often. The lights are so much easier to find than a flashlight most of the time - just follow the light and pick it up. I want to invent solar lights you can just keep in the house or someone else can come up with it and I will buy it LOL.

Abby'smom 07-03-2012 07:38 AM

wow -- never thought of that! great idea -- next trip to WalMart!

Marysewfun 07-03-2012 09:25 AM

We keep a couple on the bar/counter between kitchen and living room standing up in a jar. When we had a power outage, I grabbed one for going down the hall to the bathroom and it worked fabulously. We got ours at the $1 store but they don't have them all the time. And you don't have to worry about who had the flashlight last or where did I put the %# batteries - and there is nothing to tip over for a fire like a candle. Like you, the idea just hit me one day. Thinking of tossing a couple in the car for our trip - not sure why yet, but who knows? :-)

Wow, what a great idea thanks for sharing with all of us

BellaBoo 07-03-2012 10:25 AM

DH and I did this back in the late 90's when we had an ice storm and no power for two weeks. The solar lights lit the house up just fine. The stores were sold out of solar lights faster then generators the second day. DH learned fast what it takes to make it without power for two weeks! He has everything prepared and keeps updated for power outages. Even bought battery powered fans if it's hot weather. They work great on the deck, so stay in working order. He was an Eagle Scout so being prepared has stayed with him all these years. There are lots of solar powered items available now in electronic catalogs. In the jungle areas batteries can't be use, they corrode too fast so solar is the only option other then generator power. It's amazing to see what is available.

Patchworkmarion 07-03-2012 12:04 PM

I have heard of this, and I went out and bought one. When I put it inside it was a flashing one, with different colours.DH got up during the night, and got a terrible fright.LOL

Colbaltjars62 07-03-2012 01:54 PM

If you point or press the light towards a clear or white milk jug or jar with water in it (closed of course) You will get twice the light out of it (possibly enough to read by) Just magnifies it. Works great camping. Lights up the whole tent.

What a good idea. The ideas you get from this board are something else. Thanks for sharing, (although I thought it was going to be one of your jokes, lol).

craftymatt2 07-03-2012 05:25 PM

That is a wonderful idea, i can't believe no one thought of it sooner, thank you for sharing

luvstoquilt 07-03-2012 06:02 PM

Brilliant!

Rose_P 07-03-2012 09:58 PM

Thanks for sharing this! Our power was out for 5 days after Ike, and it could happen again.

I love the idea of solar lights, but I would be afraid to buy them for the reason you stated, Tanya. We have a chocolate lab, Mazie, and she LOVES plastic!
