Neighbors cats use my flower pots for their bathroom. What can I put in them so they won"t go in my flower pots? I tried black pepper but that didn't work. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Georgie

I use chicken wire. I just cut a piece to fit the pot. The flowers grow through the wire but the cats don't like how the wire feels to their feet. I also lay strips of chicken wire 12" wide in front of my flowerbeds. They are pretty easy to pick up before you mow the yard, and are not noticeable with the grass growing through it.

They hate citrus-fresh orange zest may work without looking bad.

Cheyenne pepper sprinkled in the top layer of soil works also.

Moth balls are toxic. Other solutions include the following:
Mix the following together and sprinkle where ever you wish to repel cats. Reapply after rain. 2 parts cayenne pepper 3 parts dry mustard 5 parts flour Any citrus peel on top of the soil will repel cats. Things that keep them from digging such as pine cones, aluminum foil, screen, stones, etc will also keep them from going potty in your pots. ;) |
Put some toothpicks sticking up from the soil.

Good luck! I live here in the country and have to have a few cats for the rodents. I can't get them to stop messing in my flower beds either - I tried putting all sorts of stuff in them and they just move them over - they actually prefer to sleep in the beds instead of messing in them . oh well.

My grandma would put pinesol out in little cups never did have a problem after that!

Cayene pepper actually is a very cruel option. If it gets in their eyes it will hurt them badly and they could scratch their own eyes out tryig to get relief. If you research it a bit, you will see that although some suggest it, it can be a very deadly alternative and is not recommended for any animals. Remember, some cats are pets and they may be someone’s best friend - harming them would be cruel.
Mothballs are also very toxic and when it rains their odor will be very strong and that is all that you will smell. It's not good to have in the soil when they break down. The chicken wire is a good alternative. Cats don't like to step on rough substances and their paws can be sensitive. Also after trimming evergreen bushes, roses or some other thorny type plant use the trimmings inside your pots on top of the soil. This will make it unpleasant for them to stand on. Stones and large pieces of rough mulch could also be used. As mentioned citrus will also work since cats hate the smell. Sprinkle good-sized pieces of rind over the cats' favorite spots. Keep replenishing them as they will breakdown and add nutrients to the soil. There are other herbal alternatives that are nontoxic and there are also commercial products available that will deter them from using your pots. There are also some plants that will deter them - perhaps your local nursery could give you more info on these. |

Cayenne pepper!! Cats sniff before they do their duty....and they don't like the smell of cayenne pepper. Cayenne isn't a chemical either so won't harm your plants.

Moth Balls work good, they also work for ground squirrel that like your garden........ yep have used it before..

I hate to tell this but we have neighbors that have numerous cats and they destroyed our flower beds, porch furniture cusions, in our garage on our cars when the door was open. We spoke to the cat owners many times and it did no good. DH bought a live trap and when he caught one we would take it to the SPCA and they would contact the owner and they would pay a fine and get the cat back. A few times of doing this they got the message.

I had a friend who put a mouse trap in her flower pots. Cats did not come back.They make commercial products to keep cats and dogs away. Just a little sprinkled on top the dirt and they won't come back.You would have to be careful but maybe a capful of ammonia in an old bottle lid.Keeps them out of the garbage.Good luck.

Second, I used to have a cat that liked to go in the veg. garden. Had a 2 story house, if I was at the door or on the porch when I shooed him away, he would "git". But if I was at a 2nd floor window, I could yell all I wanted and he would look at me like, "well what are you going to do about it?" He was a smart cat. |

It doesn't bother me, I have cats in the house and feed the ones outside, I never have mice. I heard a noise at the door the other day and when I looked out one of the cats had just caught a mouse and was walking off with her prize, I will continue feeding them. Also, the birds keep the cat dish empty, when the bird feeder runs out, who knew!! LOL

I think ultimately it comes down to the owner of the animal being responsible for their pet. If talking to the owner doesn't work than I agree with trapping the animal and taking it to the SPCA. Hugs April |
Depending on how big your pots are you can put pine cones in them. Cat's don't like to walk on them.

if you have those horse chestnuts, y'know the ones that have spines all around them? put these in flower pots! I finally stopped the stray cats to stop sleeping in them and using the bathroom. Someone else mentioned cayenne pepper or some hot sauce on the pots...
the moth balls didn't work for me..And quiltfor me when I discovered that they were toxic I did stop!, oh and by the by, putting mothballs around your house keeps bugs away. off topic next one anyone have tansy, keeps fleas away too, and rub it on coats of pets too. that will keep fleas off them. |
I like the Citrus suggestion. i'd rather smell that than mothballs. good idea!

You are lucky it is just cats. I have deer. I have given up on trying to grow flowers except on our second floor deck. Flowers of any kind are just deer food. My husband thinks it is entertainment to watch me chase off the deer. Last summer we had orphan twins take to living in our back yard. I have given up. I am letting it go natural.

My mother was having the same problem. We brought her a bag full of pear cactus "paddles" from our ranch. She used a pair of tongs and placed them around her flowers. Not only did the cats stop coming, but the cactus set roots and she now has them growing along with her potted flowers.....I like the chicken wire idea too.

Anything pricky feeling, cats don't like to walk on it. My friends used, seashells and pinecones. Generally anything you wouldn't want to walk barefoot on. I've also heard they don't like orange peels. Good luck!

i have a dog that goes out in the fenced back yard only and a cat that never goes out. i used to have outdoor carpet on my front porch but the neighborhood cats peed all over it and the cat hair was just atrocious. i pulled it up and painted. i decided to do away with a bunch of cats, i got a cage, in all i caught 18 cats and sent them to the pound. i had tried moth balls and they didn't do a thing. the pound even called me back after taking one cat in that it had rabies in case it had bitten me or my dog - fortunately it hadn't. none of those 18 cats had a collar and about half of them were ferral. i still have a problem with a neighbor's many cats, but i just run them off with the water hose or let my dog out to chase them off. my dog is a 9 lb. maltese - as if she could or would hurt them, she just likes to bark them over the fence then strut around. but her and my cat are best of friends. i love animals but get so tired of the irresponsible owners.

Lots of black pepper and no it's not cruel to the animal. One sniff it they will leave it alone. It is time for the pet owner take responsibility for his animal.
