My town has about 160,000 individuals. We are large, population-wise, but we still espouse small town values. We have several colleges here, we are the 3rd largest school district in the state, we have 2 Hobby Lobby's, 1 Joann's, Haik's Wholesale Fabric, Farmer's Market Fabric Store, Fabric Outlet, several Walmart's that still have fabric Merrily We Quilt Along Quilt Shoppe, The Quilt Sampler, and Hancock's. We are about 35 minutes north of Branson, you can be one a lake within 1 hour's drive in any direction you travel. We have lots of churches and have a diverse religious group from B'hai, Buddhism, Muslim, Baptist, Catholic, Salvation Army, Presbyterian, Episcopilan, Methodist, Latter Day Saints, Evangelical Christian, non-denomenational, you name it we have it here. I was born here but not raised here but I truly love Springfield.

I live in Fargo, N.D. and no it is not like the movie. We have a nunber of collages, lots of manufacturing because of the two interstates that run by here. Always lots to do if you have the time and energy.Just hate the cold weather and the snow.

I live in a former coal mining community, used to be a bustling place, complete with a roundhouse and hotels, theater, businesses, etc. Now its as far from that as you can get. We have one restaurant and one gas station. But we do have a post office! I grew up here, wasn't to bad then, everyone knew everybody back in the 70s when i grew up. I live one block from where i grew up. :) Most of the town now though has gone to rental houses, only some older folks here that own houses here. I do most of my shopping in Evansville IN, thats where we go to church, and shop, they have Joanns, hobby lobby, Sams club. etc. Would love to move there someday but right now this is where the Lord has us . |
Petrol stn---expensive, fresh fish shop, paper shop, library, book shop,electrical shop, sweet shop,3 small convenience shops,3 pet food shops, vegetable /fruit shop,3 hairdressers plus 2 barbers, flower shop, 2 fresh homemade bread shops,shoe shop,2 good jewellers, ironmongers,laundrette,bookies,2 pizza shops, fish and chips,dress shop,8 pubs/ inns 4 doing food,teenage "CLUB 24" ,embroidery shop,2 charity shops,2 banks,2 dentists, Drs surgery,optician,small food hall.carpet shop, cheap bed type shop, 1 church 1 chapel, 3-4 nursing homes can't remember more----------this is what I call a one eyed town with only one main street, but suppose people don't have to go far unless they wish.

One eyed town? not counting Gettysburg, it would take 3 other 3 closest (within 10 miles) towns together to come up with that many businesses around here. Our towns would be close to blind by your calculations LOL.

it would be great to be able to go to the fruit and veg shop, the bakery, a real cafe. instead we have to go to walmart and a few chain stores to get second rate meat and baked goods. the small business owner has been pushed out by taxes and greedy big business. we have been taken over by "bigger is better". i live in the state capitol of california and can't find a bakery or butcher. there is almost nothing for young people that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to participate in. just heard that we have been found to be one of the top ten worst places to live in california. would move back to portland, or or seattle, wa in a heart beat if my kids weren't here. |

This is a very small town, in the middle of farmland, by a big city, near the lake. Oh, divided by a county line so in 2 counties, and 2 school systems.
Out claim to fame: a few years ago the family next to this teeny tiny carryout, won $100,000 in the lottery. Big news for here. Damn if he didn't do it again this year, but this time was part of a group and he got $28 million! We have one bank, a little tiny post office, a restaurant My Dad grew up on a farm here. My kids went to the same school I did, and my Dad started here in the one room school house. I had a guy tell me once at a store "If you're not a (maiden name) you should be" I guess we all look alike. I only have 85 first cousins on my dad's side! My husband and I bought a house a year before we got married, we'll live here forever Can you tell I like this place? |

We moved around some and I found it difficult having to make new friends all the time. I made sure my children lived in the same place all their years through school.
