My grandma makes "cough syrup" by stuffing a glass jar (like a jelly jar) with peppermint sticks, then pouring whiskey over them to cover. When the candy has dissolved it is ready to go...soothes a sore throat and helps you sleep better, too!

At first sign of a sore throat I switch from coffee that has cream in it to black tea, sometimes with lemon and honey. Milk products build up flem and make it worse but the heat from the tea helps it go away. Also, normally it's caused from drainage in the back of the throat so check on something to dry that up.

I like to keep Steptasil lemon lozenges in the house for a sore, scratchy throat. They have a numbing agent in them that really helps plus the germ killing ingredients. I keep Benylin for colds in the cabinet. If he is on heart or blood pressure meds, you need Coracidin (sp) cough medicine? It is the box with the heart on the front for people that can't take other medicines for colds. Of course, Lipton chicken noodle soup is a family favourite during cold season.

An old holistic remedy: Finely chop 1 clove of garlic ( not the whole bulb). Let it sit for 10 minutes or so. A substance called allicin is released which is anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Chew it ( try to keep it on your teeth as it is hot). You can add a teaspoon of honey if you like. I just drink water after I swallow it. Cooking destroys the allicin ingredient. It truly works but people don't believe it or like garlic. My DD and DGD were very sick coughing, sore throat, stuffed up heads, just miserable and finally agreed to try the garlic. Within 1-2 hours they were feeling so much better and by the next day all symptoms were gone!
I have shared with others I know and they poo-poo it and stay sick...

I came across this recently and they both work. They are antibacterial, antiveral and antifungal, so they cover a multitudes of sins. Mix one tsp of local (best) honey with 1/4 tsp cinnamon and swallow. Do not take anything by mouth for 15 - 30 minutes after taking this to allow it to work. The second one has more of a bite to it. It actually changes the ph balance in the throat so nothing can grow. If it saves a trip to the docs, then I'll do it. Yes, I use this one and it works great. Mix 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, 1/4 tsp ginger, 1 T cider vinegar (organic if possible, although I use store bought) 2 T water and 1T honey (local best) I usually triple or so the recipe and store in jelly jar in the fridge. Take 1 T 3 to 4 times everyday for 3 days or until symptoms are gone which usually is 2 to 3 days.
