I need a good remedy for a sore throat and cold. Got any ideas. It's not for me; I can usually cope, but you know, it's the dh (hate for him to get sick and run down). Thanks.

thimblebug6000 01-28-2011 05:46 PM

Heat some water, squeeze lemon juice into it, add spoonful of honey.....my Mom's all time sure soother...not a cure, but sure makes the throat feel better.

craftybear 01-28-2011 05:49 PM

also gargle with warm salt water

and put vicks vapor rub on the bottom of feet after you shower, put white socks on

also put vicks on chest, in nose and will start feeling better soon
** This is an old time remedy and it does work**

Add a shot of whiskey and you got a hot toddy. Makes everything feel better and helps you sleep good too. ;-)

CarrieAnne 01-28-2011 06:22 PM

I love vicks!!! I always put it on everyones feet when they are sick. Honey works well for a sore throat. Take a spoonful of it as needed. I try to get local honey so it's got the antibodies for the sicknesses that are around here.
Tea with honey in it works well too. :)

sewgull 01-28-2011 06:48 PM

Men are always sicker than women. All the above remendies should have him feeling better, or he will be out for the night.

sash 01-28-2011 07:08 PM

thanks everyone. well, he's already gone to bed so will wait til tomorrow. i thought i remembered the one re: vicks so i had already bought some, but had forgotten about it. will make him try it tomorrow; all are good ideas. he's pretty hard headed too (lol), so might be hard to get him to do any of this. went to the grocery store today. wish i had bought some honey. oh well.

judy_68 01-28-2011 07:09 PM

Gargle with salt water.

trisha 01-28-2011 07:18 PM

Gargle with peroxide and baking soda, sore throat gone in a matter of hours.

angelwatcher 01-28-2011 07:28 PM

I use a neti pot with salt water if the sore throat is from post nasal drip. Clears out the sinus cavities and shortens a cold too. Or you can have him try a salt water nasal spray like Ocean to help loosen mucous.

Vicks on the feet and clean white socks

dwarfel 01-29-2011 05:03 AM

For sore throat gargle with warm water and karo syrup.... also butterscotch candies help coat the throat to keep it from hurting so much.

damaquilts 01-29-2011 05:21 AM

Braggs Apple cider vinegar, honey and water.
1 T each to cup of hot water. Has worked everytime in my family for 3 generations.

teacherbailey 01-29-2011 05:24 AM

All of the singers I know swear by zinc lozenges---they taste nasty but can sometimes be found with flavors, or he can suck on a piece of hard candy at the same time.

DogHouseMom 01-29-2011 05:40 AM

If he's anything like my DH you could have the quintessential "silver bullet" and he still wouldn't take it. It would put a damper on his bid for martyrdom.

nycquilter 01-29-2011 06:07 AM

take fresh sage and make a tea and drink as hot as tolerable. Also, my favorite cure though gives my husband food dreams, mash garlic cloves, apply to bottom of feet. Garlic is excreted through the lungs and is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic. So it kills the germs in the lungs as you breathe. oh yeah, rub the feet with olive oil before putting on the garlic...no accidental burns!

Hot tea and HONEY - and whiskey! LOL!

arimuse 01-29-2011 07:31 AM

My grandmother used equal parts of: honey/lemon juice/whiskey/butter. melt/mix all in a little pan and take by teaspoonful as needed.
It works cus 2 winters ago I was home alone (hubs was out of state working) and I came down w/ that miserable bird flu (if you ever get it you will not mistake it for anything! I thought I would break my ribs coughing, and then you cough for about 6 weeks after its done.) anyway, I didnt go to the dr, and bought every otc cough/flu thing they sell, and the only thing that would stop the cough was my grandmas recipe. Id sit w/ the pot and every 15 min had a spoon, let it drizzle into my throat, it would keep the coughing down for about 15 min at a time, where all the pills did nothing. share t

I don't drink alcohol, but always keep a small bottle of tequila on hand. If you gargle with about an ounce of straight tequila it will kill all the germs in your throat (big time). I usually only had to gargle a couple of times (a.m. and p.m.) and my sore throat would go away. It also tastes better than Listerine and has a higher alcohol content (maybe that's why it works so well).

Leota 01-29-2011 10:52 AM

Homemade Chicken Soup
Put in large pot with lots of water (covers chicken and veggies)
chicken breast
salt to taste
celery (finely chopped)
garlic ( just a touch)
Onion (finely chopped )
Fresh carrots (thinely sliced or chopped)
Simmer till chicken is done and veggies tinder

There's something in the chicken that helps with congestion and yucky feeling...

Lots of Zinc. Kroger has a Zinc cold remedy. It works
every time. I see y'all are in TX. So am I. I had a
horrible sore throat and cold back in Dec. I started
right away on the Zinc and it took care of the cold
symptoms. However, I had to get an antibiotic for
my sore throat. That worked, though. The reason I
noted that we are both in TX is because there is a terrible
bug going around here that starts with a cold and sore
throat, and ends up taking about 3 weeks to get rid of.
Lots of people I know have had it.

1/4 tsp baking soda in a glass of water 3 times a day

terri bb 01-29-2011 12:59 PM

vinegar is amazing, it works great! so does garlic :) i've never rubbed it on my feet but a clove of raw garlic eaten with a slice of un-buttered bread and washed down with some water if he can stand it does work great! have to try the feet thing sometime! love vicks too, works great for anything...try a little of all the replies you have gotten and it's sure to cure anything he may ever get in the future also! :) hope he feels better soon!

I was going to say the same thing.

For a man you have to bribe them to take medicine and Whiskey or Brandy will always do the trick in my experience

greenini 01-29-2011 02:06 PM

I take Nyquil pills...but only if I can sleep. Dh like Alka-Seltzer Plus...same thing, knocks him out.

grannypat7925 01-29-2011 04:12 PM

Along the same lines, but more for the cough...
my Portuguese grandmother was the neighborhood "healer" and she would pour a bottle of honey into a small sauce pan, add the juice of one lemon and heat while stirring. To that she would add whisky..until mixture was the consistency of syrup.
Supposedly the honey was soothing, the lemon juice provided Vit C and the whisky dilated blood vessels.
We would add the added instruction...drink enough of it and you really won't be bothered by the cold~! LOL. It does work in moderation of course!

Yes....great for coughs I hear. No matter....Vicks is good.
Love the smell.

jitkaau 01-29-2011 07:18 PM

A good soother is a mixture of vinegar and honey, sipped slowly.

roseOfsharon 01-29-2011 07:21 PM

All of the above, except not to put Vicks in the nostrils... just under the nose. Hope you feel better soon.

hot whiskey sling......warm water, whiskey, honey and lemon....right before you go to bed. If it doesn't work the first time, try it again the next night! LOL!

penski 01-29-2011 08:23 PM

i heard honey helps

Tudey 01-29-2011 08:24 PM

I have a great sore throat remedy---it's not the best tasting, but it works! You put up to 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and gargle, then swallow it----Do this twice every couple of hours. It will even kill strep---or so the book claimed. All I know is that it knocked my sore throat right out. Didn't taste THAT bad---all it needed was sugar!

laalaaquilter 01-29-2011 08:37 PM

warm salt water gargles. guafenisen (generic mucinex). sinus wash (Ocean is the brand I use but any buffered saline solution from that section of the store is fine). If I catch the symptoms soon enough I use Zicam to help get better quicker and have less severe version of the cold.
