Where can I find plastic stick-to-the-windows cut outs of leaves?
 

I need some leaves to make a sun painted cloth. The leaves will block out the photo paint, and make a lighter section on the cloth.

I cannot find any on the web, not sure what exactly to look for, I've tried them all I think.

Try a dollar store....

I searched for 'leaf window clings' and lots came up. Amazon has them. I think $stores, craft stores etc. also carry them.

I tried everything but cling! Did not know they were called that. My kids were grown before they got popular.

If you can't find the right product would foliage from fake flowers do? Not sure if it is workable with what you are aiming for....or if colours would run.

The silk flowers do not lay flat enough to block out the sun/heat or whatever it is that works! I used one and it did not give good coverage, and it did bleed through. The window clings should lay flat and kind of hold with suction. I'm new to this and not at all sure what I am doing. I may not have had the paint thin enough, or maybe the fabric was too dry for the silk leaves to work.

Looks like they used real leaves for the demo (they would be easier to manipulate than the silk ones). Anyway...let us see what you come up with

Yes, that is where I got my instructions and paint. After my trial that did not go well, I think that my paint was not watered down enough, and that things were not wet enough to 'stick' to the fabric. Suction and weight appears to be critical.

It was sunny, but windy and cool when I tried this, so I think that had an effect. I am getting together the goodies to use next time. I won't get this done before Christmas, but I will do this again next summer. When I have the blocks ready I intend to sew them together then make a quilted wall hanging. I'll make a decorative stitch between the blocks, then quilt around all or most of the items.

I'm looking forward to this, but this is not going to be the time.

Hmmm, this doesn't look like a technique to try when a bit rushed. Humidity may well have a part to play, we are mainly hot, dry and windy, so might not be a project for high summer here. If I get around to doing it, will surely post any results.

It does take time! I did another test inside. I got the fabric very wet and thinned the paint a bunch. I used yellow and blue and then kind of mixed it at the edge for green. Yellow can get so dark that it does not lighten as much as the other colors under the leaves etc.

I put it under a lamp to see if that would work, but it did not make much difference. I then used a hair dryer on high. That did work, so I know that heat and light are both important. I did use some of the window clings, and even though there was a clear edge, the color displacement was the same. I think I really want to do this outside in the sun and heat. I'll keep gathering items to use.

Well, you seem well on your way to achieving what you want.....you could get quite creative with the "objects"....your post got my little brain working....I am itching to do something creative with dyes/paints/fabric. I think the best thing is...even experiments that aren't quite the result you are going for, can still be used in other projects. Any, mis-dyes would still make great scrappies or art quilts. If you get time, it would be really good if you could post pics.

I did sun prints with a group of ladies a few years ago. We did it outside on a beautiful hot sunny day. We used real leaves and a variety of found objects. We had to get the leaves down fast after painting the cloth otherwise the effect just did not work, broad leaf ferns made beautiful patterns.
