I want to get a new scissors-which makes me wonder where I can hide it. If I have mine laying out, it has gotten used for definately non-sewing tasks. The worst -I caught my adult daughter using it to cut branches on the lilac bushes.
What was your worst usage?

Sadiemae 08-16-2011 09:03 AM

That is worse than anything I have ever seen...

ontheriver 08-16-2011 09:06 AM

Mine always used to end up in the garage cutting wires, gaskets, whatever the guys needed to cut. I took hubby and sons shopping with me, made each of them buy me a different type of scissor and I did not pick out cheap ones either. After that, they left them alone.

Maride 08-16-2011 12:28 PM

I keep several pairs available and very visible on the sewing table. When someone is looking for scissors for any crazy reason, they can use them. The secret is that I don't tell them that it is ok. If I catch them with them I pretend they are using the good ones and I still make a big deal out of it, but the truth is that I couldn't care less. When I need my good ones I make sure no one is around, I get them out, use them and hide them again. I know they have been to the bathroom, the garage, even the car.

Willa 08-16-2011 12:39 PM

Wire puts small "nicks" in the blade making them no good for anything. Maride has a great idea you might want to try that.

tealady 08-16-2011 02:56 PM

I have some that were used to cut vinyl flooring. I will say though, it was not anyone in my family.

isnthatodd 08-16-2011 03:18 PM

I told my hubby when I bought my Ginghers that they were not to be used by anyone but me. As the kids came along, I kept them put away but re-emphasized that they were for me only. Have never had a problem. In fact, hubby will not even get them for me!!!

Jim's Gem 08-16-2011 03:19 PM

My daughter was using the point to try to poke a hole in a tin can top. "But you only said not to cut paper with them"

carhop 08-16-2011 03:20 PM

Gave my DH all my old ones and anyothers I had, saved all the good ones for me. We made a trade off I didn't use his scrapers and he didn't go in the sewing room and use any scissors

scrappy happy 08-16-2011 03:25 PM

My hubby took my little thread snips I was using while doing the binding on a quilt and proceeded to try to use them to CUT HIS TOENAILS!!!! I caught him before he could though!!! I just looked and said I don't think so!!! and got him the clippers!! Really!!! Could not believe it!!!

ogama 08-16-2011 04:08 PM

My husband scissor-naps all the time, and by the time I track the scissors down, they are dull, dull, dull. I have a couple of pair that he is absolutely forbidden to touch - the others are the ones he's already ruined doing whatever he thought they might be useful for in the garage.

lindy 08-16-2011 04:34 PM

My husband needed to put a hole in a piece of poster board. I offered him my pointed embroidery scissors (just to make the hole, mind you). He refused saying 'I don't want to use your good scissors'. Bless him, he's a keeper!

My baby brother did that with my mothers thread snips all the time! I wonder if she knew why they were so dull!!!

Shortly after I got my first pair of Ginghers, my husband used them for cutting carpet...which ruined the sharpness and the alignment...and he felt so bad that he did go buy me a new pair. He never did that again...and after that I was always sure to have plenty of scissors around that could be used for anything, and kept my Ginghers well out of sight.

For a fee, Ginghers can go back to the company for alignment and sharpening.

Barbm 08-16-2011 04:46 PM

I remember growing up and being told not to touch Mom's good sewing scissors. (I didn't) Now I know the importance of that.

Of course, I tried that same rule but it didn't go over that well. I now have Fiskars with a chunk out from using them as wire cutter. I now have a nice pair of Ginghers that are hidden.

Painiacs 08-16-2011 09:56 PM

To cut fish and toenail? Yikes!! Funny too!:)

I like this idea!!

mmdquilts 08-17-2011 02:35 AM

I keep mine well hidden! I lost one pair and when they came back I found out they had been used on plastic, wood, metal, styrofoam, and concrete! No one dares touch them now but I keep them hidden anyway!

jasming 08-17-2011 03:18 AM

My son (age 7) was caught just last month using my scissors to cut SANDPAPER!!!

Yes he still lives with us :)

jodyma 08-17-2011 03:21 AM

Cutting wire, linoleum, metal (the old Fiskars with the grey handles can cut through a coin). I've had my old Fiskars since 2000 and they're still cutting after all this has been said and done.

LOL!!!

we used to do work on our car, a VW Rabbit diesel - had a shop manual and everything. Adjusting the valve clearance called for VW tool DF-4287 or some such thing - but we did it with a pair of scissors and a screwdriver. Not the good scissors though...

Thankfully those days are over, I HATED working on cars.

Kuusistoquilter 08-17-2011 03:56 AM

I buy lots of cheap scissors and have them in every room, so every one knows to not touch my Fiskars. Heads have rolled when they do try to use them. Now every one know to not touch the orange handles.

sewred 08-17-2011 04:05 AM

My hubby used my embroidery scissors to cut open popsicles when I was gone one evening!.

caspoohbear 08-17-2011 04:15 AM

[quote=KGoodhand]CUT HIS TOENAILS!!!! quote]

I've seen this done with someone else's scissors, fortunately not mine! Then again, I had a great grandfather who would clean his ears with his house key too.

Kat2 08-17-2011 04:41 AM

My husband knows not to use my good scissors. He wouldn't find them in my sewing room. To secure the scissors purchase a combination lock used for luggage and no one would be able to use them without the combination.

I had to buy a second pair of scissors as I hid them from my family and now I couldn't even find the first pair. :)

My kids all now well into their 30's laugh about how NOT to touch my scizzors. It sounds like they were in fear of their lives if touched. I was also a hairdresser @ the time too.

DH always asks as I give him my old scizzors. Since I recently gave him a pair that looks like the new ones I wrote NO NO NO all over the handles w black magic marker.

most of family has been fine. It is guests that get me! Cut Lilacs and open plastic bags.

I'm not going to make a fuss over scissors. If I need a new pair I get a new pair.

lillybeck 08-17-2011 06:22 AM

I found my GKs cutting paper with them. I was just a tad upset especially since I keep scissors for them all over the house. The reasoning was "the others were in the other room" grrr

Oh Maria, that is exactly what I have done. My good scissors are in a plastic tub (just like most of my stash) behind several pieces of my stash.

Wagoza 08-17-2011 07:28 AM

It took me several years to spend so much for scissors, Gingers of course. I advised, sternly, all who wanted to live in peace not to touch them. Fortunately we havn't had any issues and there are plenty of other scissors for everyday use. Even now if someone asks where there is a pair of scissors someone will yell 'Don't touch the good scissors!" which is followed by "I know!"

I did this exact same thing - and it worked, too.
