I have always called it a "split". Add the "s" and it implies two things are going on.

I've always said "splits." Maybe it's a regional thing.

Well to me the word "splits" sounds too much like a bodily function

I've never heard it called anything other than "the splits" not sure if that is just regional or prevelant throughout UK
