I am going to Iowa in a couple of weeks and since there are quilters from Iowa are there any shops I should stop at that you would recommend? I will be traveling on 80.

Since I am not sure where in Iowa you might be, here goes (smile).

Elkhorn is a lovely Dutch community right off of 80 and has a great quilt shop.

Kalona has wonderful shops and is part of the Amish community.

Ankeny has a very nice shop.

Ames, Quilting Connection is a wonderful shop, but you would have to go north about 40 miles.

If you would like directions, etc., please PM me and I would be glad to assist with this.

The ones I went to are in Lucas, Iowa, off 65 (sulky will be there the last week of the month), then of course Winterset - Fons and Porter is there.

The highways aren't listed, but the towns are - have fun!

Definitely go to Connie's quilt shop in Cedar Rapids, it's about 20 miles North of I-80 at 785 8th Avenue
Marion, IA 52302-5756. It's in an old house, and it's abolutely stuffed with fabric. One room is reproductions (30's and Civil War mostly), one for juvenile, flannel, batiks, etc. Common Threads in North Liberty is good if you like "cartoony" fabrics. There is also a very good quilt store in Manchester, Iowa, it's only a few miles North of I-80.

I agree, Kalona!!! lol

There is also one in Newton, which is right off I-80, about 50 miles east of Des Moines.

I was at the Kalona shop recently, and I was disappointed. The whole town has been hit pretty hard by the recession, since it's so based on tourism. I bought a few fat quarters, but the shop is dark, the people aren't friendly, you can do better. There aren't many quilts for sale all over town like there used to be, either, many of the shops are closed.
