It has been a long time since I have made pants of any kind, but I have done it both ways. I want to make pajamas for Christmas gifts, so will probably sew them your way. If I remember right, I think I preferred that way when I tried it. Some of my pajamas will be for men, and my pattern does not show a fly. I would rather not go to the trouble of making a fly, but would that be acceptable? I have two patterns, and neither show a fly. Why would a pattern company even make one that way?

I have some men's sweat pants and none of them has a fly, either. I wouldn't worry about it. If the guy needs to go, he'll figure it out.

I make all my pants that way, even if they have a fly. Sweat pants, PJ's or good styled pants, they all turn out great. In fact putting a zip in a fly is easy to do before the pants are assembled.

I make mine the exact same way! I used to sew the crotch differently but once I learned about putting one leg inside the other, I've never done it any other way. I don't buy a pattern either. If I am making them for someone, I just ask to borrow their favorite pair and use that for the pattern.

All the boys shorts that I make in my Knox charity group are done this way.So so easy. Made a pair a few weeks ago
from a striped pillowcase and even matched lines. You described it well. This can be considered the commercial
way things are sewn.
