Don't buy a Sleep Number that is on advertised special unless they have that exact model in the store for you to try out. Ours is OK, but I think I would have been happier with the model that was in the store that we had actually lain on that was very comfortable (and the same price). The salesperson declared this one on special to be "a much better bed" and "just like the much more expensive one except that it would be warmer (the expensive one was freezing)". Shouldn't have believed him. His commission was probably much higher if he sold the specials. Lesson learned ...

We have a temperpedic split king and love, love love it. Our bed had no odor whatsoever and we slept on it from the first night. Our son and DIL had a sleep number for a number of years, got really tired of it, and got a temperpedic when they moved here. They said there was no comparison the temperpedic won hands down. Also when they were breaking the SNB down before they moved, there was mold in the chamber and they just trashed it. They did say they thought the mattress was a little warm, but they got a cooling pad and said it worked. My advice is to check out both kinds of beds and see which suits your needs the best. BTW, our prior mattress was a pillow top with memory foam and it broke down on the sided in a few years. Also, the temperpedic has a 20 year warranty.

My DH returned his. They are so overpriced for basically an air mattress. Perhaps if you are buying if so two people can have the softness they prefer on each side of the bed it might be worth it. But he has sleep apnea and snores violently. So, needless to say, he sleeps alone. So he hoped it would be soft enough that he could stay on his side. He only used it for about a month when the "pillow top" started shifting around. Plus the side feels really odd when you sit on the edge of the bed. It's basically a fufu air mattress.
They tell you you can return it after the trial period. But the fine print includes either shipping it back to them or paying an additional $200 to have it picked up. That's on top of the $180 to have it delivered and set up. It's not as easy as they make it seem. "Try it for 100 days" BLah, Blah.

After bad luck with a well known brand pillow top ( replacement was even worse) we bought a sleep number bed. DD has owned 2 of them for 12 yrs & never a problem. I already had a King size mattress topper,so put that on the new K size Sleep number bed 7 yrs ago.
Was always a restless sleeper before, lucky to sleep a few hrs at a time. it seemed strange ,sleeping till 7 am...smile.
We both sleep great, but ppl are different.Good luck with what ever you decide.

We bought a firm temperpedic or one like it. We love it and put our 4" memory foam topper on top of it. That raises the bed and makes it easier to get in and out of bed..

Next bed I purchase will be a Temperpedic. Two sisters and one brother have them and love them. All of them have either back problems or arthritis. They wouldn't have any other mattress. My BF in TX has one also and loves it as well. My BF also bought one of those KS memory foam type mattresses from Overstock.com for her guest room for around $300. We stay with her for several weeks at a time and sleep on that mattress, it feels like a Temperpedic. I sleep like a rock on it.

We have had our sleep number for about 15 years...LOVE it! I work at a local Ronald McDonald House and they have tempurpedic beds...Many of the guests complain they are hard and bother their backs..just fuel for thought.

You don't really have to choose between the temperapedic and sleep number as sleep number has a model with the same foam topping. That is the one we got and it is very comfortable. They do give you a 100 day period totry it and I think the guarantee is 25 years. Just be sure to lie on each one long enough and adjust the number in the store several times before deciding. For me the best part was sleeping through the night.

I've had back surgery 6 times, I'm glad I seen this posting. We bought a bed from JC Penny's just by filling out the questionnaire and the mattress was great. We also have an RV, hubby bought a tempur pedic mattress topper for the bed we sleep in, it hurt my back so he bought another to put on top of the 1st one. It's better but not great. so after reading these responses I might look into a sleep number mattress for our RV. Not sure if they make them or not but it's worth a try. I'm still amazed that I could fill out a questionnaire from Penny's and get a comfortable bed!

we have had a SNB for several years now and couldn't be happier. My husband is 6'3" 280lbs and he likes a firm mattress. I am 5'4", 180 lb with arthritis issues and need a softer bed. it has been great to be able to adjust the firmness as I need it.
