Scissor Queen

Does anybody remember the kitchy places along the interstates back in the 70s? Here in the Mid-West we had Nickerson Farms and Stucky's and there was one other one but I can't remember what it was. The Nickerson Farms had a giant bee hive at one end of the building you could see the bees working in and some times there were bees in the stores. Nickerson Farms were good size buildings with red roofs. Stucky's were smaller and they had yellow roofs. Most of them seemed to be on an interstate interchange out in the middle of nowhere and had signs telling you there was one for miles ahead. Of course they both had the standard, shot glass, spoons and t-shirt souvenirs.

I do remember them . We didn't relly travel, only to visit family but as a kid I loved to stop there. My folks preferred the little"mom and pop" type eateries off the interstate though

I definitely remember Stucky's, always had to stop there whenever we traveled. Have never heard of Nickerson Farms though.

In the Northeast (and maybe elsewhere) we had Howard Johnson's, with the orange roof. I always used to get the Little Boy Blue plate - can't even remember what was on it. And then walking out past that ice cream counter, but we never did get any.....

I remember both. When we first moved to NM, we were pretty poor for a while and on a week-end, if we had enough gas, we would ride out to Stuckey's and buy a candy bar. Several years after that, we headed for the UP for vacation and to visit family. We stopped at a Nickerson's Farm and were outside looking at the bees that were inside the plexiglass and from somewhere, a bee stung my middle daughter. We went into the restaurant and when the waitress came to take our order, I asked for some baking soda to make a paste to take the sting out . She got all huffy and told me that honey bees do not sting and especially 'their" bees. I told her, "look, I am not looking to sue anyone, I just need to stop the pain this child is in". She finally went off and came back with the soda, so all ended well and the meal was pretty good too, if I remember correctly.

I'm from South Dakota and don't remember places like that but we have Wall Drug on Interstate 90.

Now it's Cracker Barrel it seems; like that much better!

I just remembered, Stucky's were the places with the 99 cent breakfasts. It was two eggs any way you wanted them and one piece of toast. That was it. Even back then it was kind of a rip off for 99 cents because a whole breakfast wasn't all that much more.
