After reading all those suggestions for storing fabric, I am still unsure if I would be better off storing some fabric in my cedar chest. I have decided to take certain fabrics and store them away for my great grandchildren.....novelty fabrics that will just blow their minds when they come across them!! We keep my cedar chest in our bedroom. I have a few dolls from when I was a child (50+ years ago) and paper documents of my mothers from 1920. They are in great shape. Any suggestions? Maybe wrapping the fabric in cotton sheets?

What about the oils from the cedar? That would be my concern.

I ruined my baby quilt - 1943 by putting it in my cedar chest. Where the fabric touched the cedar, it at the fabric.

The cedar chest is so old, it is dry with no oils left in it.
Also, if I wrapped the fabric in a sheet, would that help?

I'm hoping the wraping in a sheet works for the quilts I have on shelves in a dresser with doors.

I'm not sure how well they work, but how about some of those space bags where you use your vacuum to suck out all of the air?

How about wrapping the fabric in acid free paper and then muslin or vice versa. My neighbor told me about her grandmother and her mother storing quilts in their cedar chests this way. The grandmother did not start out with the acid free paper, but used flour sacks and old blankets to wrap them in. She stopped doing this when her daughter told her the paper would be the best solution. They took them out regularly and aired them out. No problems with the oils ruining the quilts.

Do what the dry cleaners do when preserving wedding gowns, etc. They use acid free tissue to wrap the item and store it in a box.
