Default surprise at the Fair!!

Over the summer, my 6 year old granddaughter and I got some sewing in. I helped her make an elastic-waist skirt out of seersucker that I have had laying around for a long time. I told her we ought to enter it in the Fair. Then I remembered that my sister would let her grandson help her bake and they would save several cookies in the freezer, to enter in the fair. My granddaughter wanted to make cookies with lots of colored sugar - she KNOWS Grammy has them in the cupboard. I found a recipe for a rolled sugar cookie and she really did dump the ingredients in the bowl and send the flour flying! And then to roll out the dough - she more or less pushed it into cutting shape with the rolling pin. She decorated them with orange and green sugars.

Well, her cookies and skirt earned her second place in the junior division. She was so excited! I don't remember where my items placed and I didn't take pictures of them. I'll find out when I pick them up. I was just so happy for my granddaughter. She has plans for next year's fair - she wants to make matching dresses, for her Mommy, Grammy, herself and her GRANDPA!! There's a winner for you!!

That's adorable. Give kids confidence when they start out and they will want to continue. Never know what she will have made by next year. Can't wait to see grandpa in his dress.lol Make sure we get a pic of that!

That's wonderful. That's how my mother started me out when I was around 7 years old. I made simple things like hand towels then moved on up to clothing. I always won awards on my sewing as she was very strict that I follow the rules. Then I moved on to quilting and here I am. I am so grateful for my mother. One thing that has always bothered me is a home without a sewing machine. I have relatives like that and they pay to have every little thing done. And, no I don't volunteer to do it. I didn't raise them. I did offer to teach a niece how to sew patches on her uniforms - never heard another word from her.

The joy of your first ribbon! That will stay with her the rest of her life.

You are so lucky to be able to spend that kind of time with your granddaughter - you will both remember your time together!

That is great! I help take in entries at our county fair and the entries has fallen off so much that I fear for our fair. We used to be so busy that it took at least 6-8 people just in our division to take in entries. Now, 2 are sufficient. I'm thinking that people don't have time to do this any more and the ones who have in the past are not encouraging their kids to do this. It is sad.
