We are in the middle of contesting our property taxes and I have a hearing with the county board tomorrow, so I was doing some research and wondering....what do you pay for your yearly property taxes?

Im in central Illinois and they are $6100 a year....in a farm town of less than 900....too much!!!

You know you can go on the website for your county online and find out what others are paying for their property taxes.

We live on less than 1 acre of land and less than $400.00 a year in Indiana, USA

I also am in Indiana . Live in a neighborhood that is declining ( whatever that means) and I paid $421.00 last year :shock: I also am contesting them. According to the records I have the nicest house in the hood :roll: :thumbdown:

How does this $ 6100.00 compare to last year? And do you have any acreage? Seems kind of excessive to me. We have an acre of land that's not developed, taxes are 560.00 a yr. and our house sits on an acre with taxes at 1200.00 a yr. Of course we don't have a sales tax, so they gouge us other ways.

I think Illinois is a high property tax state. Our DS and DDIL lived there for 2 years and their prop taxes were very high compared to family in other states.

I fought ours one year and won because our house was not finished, and comparable houses that were done were assessed less. It was a lot of footwork, but if you are prepared, it can be done. That was upstate NY. When we moved to NC, it was just a matter of walking around with the assessor, and the whole upstairs of our huge Victorian farmhouse was taken off the square footage because it was not ducted for air conditioning. My giant barn was taken off because it did not have a cement floor or foundation. The smoke house was taken off because the supporting piers needed repointing. A lot is in the location and what other places in your area are like.

I have 60 acres in north central Nevada and the taxes for it are $26 a year. My property in middle TN is 98 acres with a 4200sqft home on it is $1800 a year, its listed as a farm but there is only about 5 acres that is flat enough to farm the rest is hills and ridges. And the home that I live in all the time they set me back $4800 a year but I am on a full acre and I have a nice 3000 sqft home in a good area.

Everything I own is paid for so I have to write the checks for the taxes each year and I really do not like it at all but what can you do?

I am however going to get the taxes lowered on my property in middle TN by half by going to a land management plan for my timber thats on it. They have been strip cutting the timber out of the area since the unemployment rate shot through the roof so the state wants to try and to keep the land management at bay. And since its listed as a farm (LOL) I can get a pay check from the state not to farm the acreage that I could not farm if i had too.

I am fixing to move up to the middle TN property this summer after my daughter graduates and gets ready to go to LSU and I am going to sell this house to my little sister. At least then I can save a few dollars on taxes but I have to build a shop so I can do my paint and bodywork so there goes some more money I dont want to spend. But I will be in the most beautiful area and I do not have to worry about crime and the hustle and bustle of the big city!!

Ours were 8,000 on a 1900 sq ft house. But since property values have gone down our taxes this year dropped by 3,000.

In central IL in a town of 4000 withing the city limits, we are paying $2780/year. My husband is protesting it because the valuation on our house is set at $125,000 for tax purposes. There has been no comparable house sold in this town in over two years that brought more than $100,000. When we had the house for sale for six months 4 years ago, the best offere we had was $90,000.

If you go to the court house and look up the taxes of all the city employee and commissioners, it is odd to see that even though 2 have brand new houses that are bigger than ours, their tax value is less. Makes a person wonder.
