Here's a question that's been perplexing me for years. Any and all of you are welcome to pop in with your thoughts... but those of you who answer/send e-mails as part of your job, I'm particularly interested in knowing how you handle...

... bounced-back e-mails.

It's not easy to tell who they are for or what they were about. And they usually come packaged as an attachment and, well, viruses can come packaged the same way. And if I were going to try to create a virused attachment and get people to click on it, I'd just package it as a bounced-back e-mail. Hmmm...

If I can see an obvious typo in the outgoing e-mail address, I'll correct it and send it again. But other than that...

How do YOU handle bounce-backs? Do you spend much time trying to figure them out? Or do you just shrug and say "oh well"?

I don't recall ever getting a bounced back e-mail in an attachment. I would not open it if I did. I try to send e-mails by replying to someone's e-mail to avoid typo errors. It's usually me that types something wrong when an e-mail does bounce back. With Verizon, there is usually a reason noted when one bounces back.

At work I am primarily sending e-mails to clients. I know who our clients are and so I then research why the e-mail came back. Do I have the wrong address? Haved I typed it in wrong? I will try to resend.
Depending on what it is, I sometimes will print up the information I am trying to send and mail it to them. I work in an Accounting office.

Usually if it is one that I KNOW I created the original email, the problem is a typo and I correct it. The other possibility with that type of bounce back is that the person has a new email address that they have not yet notified me about. If it is a regular customer or vendor, I most likely have their phone # as well so I call them to verify correct email address.

Other than that, I figure it's bogus and delete it.

I am editor for our guild newsletter and when I get returned emails I also try to correct the email address, but so far, every one of the returns have come with a message from Google (which I use) which explains why the message was returned..for example - message was rejected by the recipient's service provider...contact yahoo/AOL/etc for more information. I've never had to worry about a virus.
