I recently put in hard wood floors and ordered a throw run for under my dining room table. I love the pattern of the rug, but did not realize it came with fringe on it. I am in a wheelchair and it's the only rug I have to vacuum, but that fringe is a real bugger, and never looks neat. My question...Has anyone ever taken off the fringe? I will sit for hours taking it off, but I don't want to ruin the rug. Any ideas?

It may not be a separate fringe, it may be part of a woven rug, i.e. the fringe is actually the threads that the rug was woven on (the warp threads). You will need to look closely to see how the rug was constructed.

I had that problem once & took the fringe & turned it under and used wide packing tape & surprisingly it say on and didn't really make much of a hump

This sounds like a good idea to me. You never know how the edge might (or might not) be finished once the fringe is removed.

Let my DH vacuum over it a couple of times!! I brought home a rug like yours and the first time he vacuumed the sweeper ate half the fringe. Ended up cutting it off--it was attached on the back with a large piece of fabric. I would try the packing tape idea before cutting.

it may be part of the warp - you do need to check it out carefully before cutting anything off -

how big of a lump would it make if it was turned to the back and taped down? Sounds like a low-tech solution, but it if works, why not?

i would also tape it onto the back. i wish someone had told that to me when i had one. those fringes get nasty when left to themselves, and they always come on the nicest rugs.

Thanks, I'll try the tape idea on the small rug first and see what happens. I don't think it is woven into the rug, but I also don't think those two ends are finished off the like sides. So I think I would just ruin the rug is I took off the fringe. Thanks for all your help.

one of my cats started chewing the fringe on my good rug. i just folded it under and that seemed to work.

I taped the small rug and it looks great. I'll wait until I vacuum it a couple times to see how it turns out before I do the bigger rug. Good idea guys.
