For any of you along the east coast in the middle of the mess, our hearts and prayers are with all of you. If there is ANYTHING at all we can do to help, let us know. Red Cross people are headed there this morning from other parts of the country, but we would like to help, too, in some way.

That is so sweet of you. Last night I was up watching the specials on channel 13 and 10. To see how bad Queens and other areas of NY and NJ got it really made me count my blessings even more. The only thing that I worried about and knew would happen was my roof leaking. It needs to be replaced but will be awhile before I can afford that. Even though some of our area had some damage it is so minor compared to what it could have been and especially to what others had happen to them. I cried and prayed for them all. God bless all the caring people in the world and even the ones who don't care so that maybe one day they'll understand. You don't have to know someone to care or feel for them and what they've gone thru.

I am sure that we will eventually be hearing from QB members who were severely affected by Sandy. Perhaps each of us could adopt someone as a QB quilt buddy and gift them some stash, supplies, etc to replace what they have lost. Just a thought.

I think gift cards for food and essentials is more important right now than a "stash". Let insurance take care of that part.

I'm originally from New Orleans, land of hurricanes. Not everything is totally ruined, by flooding. Non-electrical things can often be washed and returned to use. Fabric & clothing can be washed and disinfected. Immediate needs are usually fresh water, food, clean clothing (until power is restored), batteries and things of that nature.

You are right Chasing Hawk. Your suggestion is so much better than mine. Your reference to insurance made me realize that I should contact my insurance guy and ask him about making sure that my herd/hoard of vintage and new sewing machines are covered under my home owner's insurance. One never knows.

Here in central NJ things are relatively good. Many downed trees and power lines. We lost power at 6:30PM Mon. and are still out. Best guestimate for restoration currently is Mon. 11/5. We had a tree go into the wires in front of our house and it pulled the wires from the insulators on the pole so I imagine we'll be out longer that most as our street is not overly populated. Many of the downed trees are into houses and cars. Our damage very minimal - a small piece of flashing on the side of the house, a large trellis/vine, and a couple of tree limbs. We have a generator and gas heat/hot water/cooking. So, while things are not 'normal' we do have heat, hot shower, can cook and haven't lost any food yet. Others here, and certainly more so in other parts of the state, are in far worse shape. Our coastline has been destroyed not only by erosion, but virtually every structure; home; lots of infrastructure are no more. Being without power for a few days is nothing by comparison.

And, sorry for the personal rant, but when you are told by the powers that be to evacuate - DO IT! When you don't, you're putting my DH's life on the line. And many other first responders. Please don't make me a widow unnecessarily. Your stuff is STUFF! I'd be sad to lose things as well. I get it when something freakish happens that could not be foreseen. In this case - not so for many, many people. OK - rant over.

I'm in southern NJ...we lost power for about 15 hours monday-tuesday. all are find. my sister (in monmouth county) is still without power, as are my parents home (in somerset county).

NJ Quilter-if you need anything let me know! i understand that finding gas is becoming challenging.
