I am thinking of purchasing a home security camera system. I would like something that has at least 4 cameras and recorder/hard drive but will be inexpensive. I have been doing research on line and thought maybe some of you have a system that you like. I don't need an alarm system or want to pay monthly charges. The cameras will be placed outside and I know that I don't want wireless system.

I bought a Swann camera system that fits all of your criteria. I installed it in our home in Wyoming that we had not moved in to yet, and I was able to hook it up with my laptop and smart phone and view any of the 8 cameras from Colorado. Only problem I had was I watched a pack rat chewing on the wires of one camera, then of course that camera shut off.

My neighbor purchased this system from Best Buy after three break-ins and two attempted break-ins. Although he has a security system you can tell he is gone 90% of the time so his house is a target for break ins. He has a friend who had this system installed at his rental houses and so my neighbor got the young man who did the install to come put in his system. The installer recommended a camera at the front door, one on each corner of the house and one at the side door that has been repeatedly kicked in. That left him with a couple of extra cameras in case he needed a replacement. I've viewed footage from the cameras when it caught a guy wandering around his house and the resolution is excellent.

My research has indicated that areas with lots of wind and close proximity to other wifi users can cause interference with video feed and most use memory card to record. This system will be located at our property on the beach (windy) and close to several neighbors with wifi. That is reason I am curious if others here have any knowledge of what works and what doesn't. Will look at the Swann and Defender systems mentioned but if anyone else has a suggestion would appreciate the input.

We have an Amcrest system that came with 4 cameras and a DVR (less than $300 on Amazon, last time I checked). It works great. I read the same thing about wireless systems, and decided to go with the wired kind. You can buy additional cameras, if you want more. I like that you can also view the cameras on your computer and cell phone. We can see all around our house, no matter where we are ... even if we're out of town.

I'm going to keep watching this thread. We are moving in a few weeks and DH wants to install video cameras around the house. It already has a security system.

I'm going to be watching this thread to see if anyone chimes in who has actually had a break in and how it worked out. I only know one person who has had a security system and had a break in and theft. In my area, thefts of property are not investigated that well and unless they happen to arrest the person on the video on another crime or he is known to the police, the video isn't much good. At least with a monitored alarm system you have a chance to catching them in the act.

We purchased The Ring after several issues in the neighborhood. Not us. The front door bell has a built in camera and we have another over the garage that is run by a small solar panel. My phone giggles when someone crosses the path of the cameras. Have not had any problem with wind or other wifi's in the neighborhood. When we were on vacation, the mailman left a package, I called the house-sitter and told them where the package was located. I really like it, when the camera is activated, the info goes to a "cloud" and costs $36 a year. If there are issues, you can go and get the info for the police.

I wish they didn't need to have internet/wifi .... I'd love to have a system for our cottage up north.
