I'm not an axe murderer, I swear!

Last night I was sitting in my familyroom watching TV with the cat when there was a knock on the door, at 9:30pm. The cat ran to the door, me following behind. I turned on the porch light to look out the peephole but I couldn't really tell who was there, just saw a black jacket.

Maybe I shouldn't have answered the door at all but instead I grabbed a Samurai Tool that was just delivered and was still on the table by the door. It's a small handaxe with a hammer-head on one side and a crowbar on the end. It's new and still gleaming black.

I held the axe on the side of my leg and opened the door, also trying to block the indoors only cat. It was the woman who just moved in next door to me. I was keeping the axe out of sight but then the cat went between my legs and ran outside. I started to go after her and stepped out from behind the door. The woman saw the axe and took a couple of steps back off of the porch.

I didn't say a word about the axe and neither did she. She came over to ask if I would nail one of the boards back up on the fence that fell over onto my side.

I laugh every time I think of it. Maybe I should bring her a couple of jars of homemade jam as a more appropriate welcome.

With all that is happening today, I would be concerned about opening a door at that time without knowing who was on the other side. The crime rate is up because the economy is down and sometimes desperate people do stupid things. I don't mean you or the neighbor but we have just got to be cautious. Send over the jam or invite her over for coffee and let her know you really are a very nice person. Who knows? Maybe she quilts or at least is interested in learning. You could make a friend. You'll have to let us know what happens next.

How funny!!!  Homemade jam is a good idea, but she just might think it's poisoned! You might want to go with a fancy storebought jam!!

Good for you--being safe! She might get the wrong impression of the neighborhood--but I'm so glad you acted cautiously. Homemade jam is perfect.

What kind of person knocks on a neighbors door she hasn't met yet to complain about a board loose on a fence?!!! Good grief, maybe it's good you had an ax in your hand, she won't bother you at odd hours anymore!!
