What is "12 days of christmas" all about??

looking for an advent calendar I come across "12 days of christmas" again and again and I dont understand it.
We have 24 days of advent, on 24th in the evening (after dinner) the christchild is bringing the presents and Santa is showing up on December 6th.
Would you tell me more?

12 Days of Christmas refers to a folk song that describes all the things a true love gives his maiden.
"On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me... a partridge in a pear tree..."
The 12 days? Who knows? Maybe they couldn't come up with any more verses?

Obviously the 12 days start at 24th of Dezember and last to January 6th!??

The 12 days of Christmas are the days between the birth of Jesus and the visitation by the 3 Kings (Epiphany). In some countries there is a gift given on each of the 12 days. The meaning of the gifts in the song remain a mystery. Who would want all those birds around.

We used to always decorate the tree Thanksgiving weekend (because everybody was there to do it!) and take it down on New Years Day, starting out the new year with a nice clean living room.
When I was growing up my mom always made the Christmas fruitcakes on Thanksgiving afternoon. It was my job to shell and chop the pecans...and of course eat bunches of 'em while I was at it.
I've seen an email that gave a meaning for the gifts on each of the 12 days of Christmas. Will look to see if I can find it.
...Looked but it must have been on my old computer that crashed awhile back.
