Don't Know if it is a saying but my granny had this little picture hanging in her hall and I now have it and it says....

As you ramble on though life brother what ever be your goal, keep your eye upon the doughnut and not upon the hole.

it is old has some strange looking guys on each side one with a doughnut and the other with a big hole. They kinda look like court jesters.

In my family, that molasses was running uphill in January, but my favorite , after I had my own children, was this, "you can't put old heads on young shoulders". Boy, if that isn't just true. And PS, I also remember the slop bucket, or Grandma called it a slop jar.

"Smoke follows beauty"...I have no idea what it means other than it kept me carrying firewood until the lard or tallow was all rendered.

"Don't buy a pig in a poke."

"Wind from the east is fit for man nor beast."

"If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all."...That was a golden rule with Grandma and she meant it.

We all dreaded this one, "Fetch me a green switch."

"Stupid is as stupid does." I'd never heard the pretty one before.

"He's whistling in the graveyard."...Bluffing to hide his fear.

"You're barking up the wrong tree."...Doing something wrong, looking in the wrong place, blaming the wrong person, etc.

"That dog won't hunt."---You're lying or whatever you're trying to do won't work or whomever they're discussing is worthless/lazy.

"You're wasting daylight."...Normally said to teenagers that need to do outside chores before it gets dark. I use this with my son on the day before trash pickup all the time. We're about 500 feet back from the curb and it's dark at the end of the driveway.

"A stitch in time saves nine." Grandma and Great-Grandma both used this one alot. Grandma had 13 kids so she and her mom were always mending something for one of them or one of us "older" grandkids. We were supposed to immediately take off the slightly damaged item and put it in the mending basket and if you didn't and allowed it to get worse, you would hear, "Stupid is as stupid does." If you had been previously told to put something in the mending basket and didn't; you might hear the dreaded, "Fetch me a green switch."

I'm sure I'll think of many more while I'm trying to sleep tonight.--LOL.

Make sure your words are as sweet as honey you may have to eat them.

Your face is going to stay like that.

My Grannys 102 year old friend would say "a scaly sky never leaves the earth dry". I always think of her when the sky looks "scaly".

I just had to add to this one, I had a science teacher who always told us to change our diapers!

Opinions are like ____holes, everyone has one!

Sometimes in life you are going to have to do what you don't want to do, that just makes the times when we are doing the things we want to do all the better.

Don't wear your behind on your shoulders!

If you were truly sorry you would not of done it in the first place.

It is better to say nothing and have them think you are stupid then to open your mouth and prove them right.
