Default Why is my freezer full of rice packs, lol?

I have a variety of shapes and sizes of rice packs that I use for my various aches and pains, lol. Even tho I usually heat them in the microwave, I had thrown a few in the deep freeze in case we needed some ice packs. Just a few, out of the way, no problem. And then.....my dh did something to his knee. We aren't sure what he did, but his knee really swelled up, so I pulled out one of the rice packs and gave it to him. Ahhhhh....he is hooked. No more drippy ice cubes. But now, somehow, all the rice packs have left the deep freeze, and are now lounging in the kitchen freezer. Hmmmm.

I love my rice packs, and I appreciate that they work really well, but do we have to have them all in the kitchen freezer? What happened to my fudge pops? My popcicles? Tonight I made my dh two nice packs of his own, the perfect size for his knee (I know because he told me which one was THE PERFECT SIZE) and put them in that freezer. The rest are finding their way back to the deep freeze, except for the one I heated in the microwave, lol.

I was done in by my own craftiness, lol.

aren't you glad it doesn't take a 20 lb turkey to sooth an aching joint? LOL

There's one of those left in there too, lol. He had to get three when they went on sale. We had one for Thanksgiving, one for Christmas. We USED to have one every 6 weeks. NO MORE!!!! I don't love turkey like he does, lol.

I used to keep packages of peas in the freezer for ice packs, but the rice packs are so much nicer, and they never spoil. I made him a couple that are 9 x 10 inches, double layer of muslin, then made removable covers with a nice sportsman print on them. I told him he can take them to work and toss them in the freezer there, and not be embarrassed by the butterfly covers, lol.

I have a long one that I have been using on my neck, and was thinking last night that I am going to make a second cover for it with ties, so that I can easily fasten it around my neck and have it stay in place. I can't remember when I didn't have at least a couple on hand...they are so convenient.

I have a bag of cherry pits that I keep in my kitchen freezer for the same purpose. They really hold the heat for a long time when microwaved. I didn't know you could microwave the rice bags and that sounds like a great idea. Wonder what size would be good for an aching shoulder? My DH has terrible arthritis and his shoulders ache all the time. Guess I'll measure him, lol! Thanks for the idea.

Wow! I think I need a few of these. I have had some filled with deer corn in the past, but didn't feel good on lower back, too hard.

Have never heard of these, I'm going to go look for other threads!! Sure would have come in handy the other day when I plopped a bag of Brussels Sprouts on my knee. That was the only thing I had in the freezer.

I make mine using a double layer of muslin. Size and shape depend on what I want to use them for. The ones I made for my dh to use on his knees were 9 x 10 inches, and I put 1 lb and 13 oz of rice in them. Make sure the seams are good and tight. I make a removable cover for them. The best way is to make a pillow sham by using fabric that is twice the length plus about 5 inches. I turn the edges over about a 1/4 inch and sew down. The fabric is places with right sides facing, and the extra inches are on the inside of this fold, so that when you turn it out, the right side shows. Sew the seams, flip, and you should have a perfect little pillow sham to fit over the rice pack.
