Why pin apron bib to dress?

My grandmother had a lot of aprons like this. This very reason was why she pinned. She wore the smock ones that tied on the sides in the winter since they were a little warmer. I miss that lady so much.

In Girl Scouts, I was a leader, we learned that it was easier to let that bib down to be presentable than to take the apron off. The bib would fall over the dirtiest part of the skirt of the apron then the woman would be much neater. If there were a neck strap that would be dangling and could catch on things. Don't know if that's the reason but that's what we were told. This was Civil War era we were learning about and they used straight pins not safety pins. My grandmother always wore one that crossed over in the back.
