Default Newbie looking for easy pattern

I want to make my first quilt for my son to take with him to college. I would like to have a plain center block that I can paint the school mascot on and then use the school colors to build out from there. Any suggestions?

Would you like to keep adding borders to the center block. I "can see" a large middle block with wide and/or
narrow borders all around matching/coordinating with the colors in the center block.

Thank you everyone. I have always wanted to quilt, but time has been an issue, now with my son gone, I will have time to fill. Thanks again.

Do you have a local quilt shop? If you were willing to buy the fabric from them and come in when they weren't busy they would probably help you make one like needles3 suggested.
