Default Canadian expat in Mexico City

My name is Heather; I have lived in MC for a long time. I learned to quilt many years ago from a French woman when I lived in Brussels. I left quilting behind when I returned to Mexico and decided to take it up again 10 years later. How things have changed! I learned rotary replaced my X-ray patterns; no more quilt as you go; everything seemed so much easier. I have found a wonderful place to learn new techniques but mostly I work at home. I like to have several projects on the go; sometimes I feel like hand quilting and others like cutting or sewing. Right now I am putting the binding on a smaller quilt - a 70x70 inch and would like some advice on the width of the binding. I did a thinner binding on an earlier quilt and not sure I liked it as much as the wider one. Any ideas on how wide a binding should be? Does it depend on the size of the quilt or merely personal taste?

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. I usually cut my straight grain, double fold binding at 2 and 1/4 inches for about a 1/4 to 3/8 finished binding on the quilt. It is your quilt and you can make the binding whatever size you like.

Welcome from the Florida west coast! That's me waving across the Gulf . I most often use the method Tartan described, receivershipas binding with striped fabric can add nice detail for certain quilts too.

Thank you for the welcoming messages. It is hard to quilt in Mexico where many see it as a "poor man's" answer to keeping warm! Not particularly appreciated - underscored by the fact that there is no word for "quilting" in the Spanish language. Thank you Ontario for your answer! It IS indeed my quilt, so I should be able to bind as I wish.

Welcome from Southern California! Your binding is really just personal taste. I usually do mine at 2 1/2 in.
