Smile Hello, I'm new to the forum.

I have been quilting for a few years but tonight I was trying to figure out how much backing a quilt my sister-in-law made needed and realized that each time I do this it is by laying out the quilt and laying my fabric on the quilt, (I have a few large yardages I have in my stash), and visually using the actual fabric to figure it out.
I know there are formulas to figure out what you need for fabric of various widths, 42", 44", 104" or what ever it is. I am not sure what those formulas are. Does anyone know of an easy formula to figure this out? Thanks. I appreciate the help...
btw/ the quilt she made is 82 w X 102 l and fabric is 42"

Also, does it matter if the back is pieced vertically or horizontally?

Your backing should be about 90" wide by 108" long, so it will take wide 42 x 2 + 9" = 90"
Long 42 x 2 + 27" = 108 wide (all with 1/2 inch seams.)
I hope this helps.

Welcome from Mid Missouri
For yardage you will need two pieces 90x42 (5 yards) PLUS one piece 90 X 24 (108-84) (2.5 yards) for a total of 7.5 yards. Piece horizontally because of the way you are cutting the pieces.

Welcome from Texas.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. I don't do math because I never trust my calculations. If I have a large quilt that I don't want to piece, I use the extra wide backing fabric. If I do piece the back, I usually put the seam vertically because it is less noticeable (in my opinion) if you get it a little off when making the sandwich. It does help to put pins on the centers of both top and back so you can feel through the sandwich to match them up. I do like the backs where they piece in extra blocks to make the quilt reversible. The only drawback I can see to that method is the quilting from the top will not match the design on the back?
