I love quilting, but gave it up a few years ago when my husband passed away. I am ready now to begin again. Started on a wall hanging and in the directions it says to "fussy-cut". I have no idea what this means. Can anyone help?

    Welcome from Pa

Fussy cut means to take the pattern and "frame" a portion of the pattern so that the square (or whatever shape it is) has the pattern centered in the block like a picture.

Hi and Welcome from Northern Indiana !

Fussy Cut, means to cut out a specific area (if I am correct) . So if the fabric has large areas of background and then a design you would cut out the design . Does that make sense ?

Thank you so much for the prompt reply! What a great resource this will be for me....will probably have a million more questions, since a lot has changed since I stopped quilting.

Welcome from Roscoe, Illinois. Glad to see the responses you got. I had to learn that myself a little while back.

Hi. A way to decided what to FUSSY CUT is to take a piece of paper, and in the center of the paper mark the size of the FINISHED block, cut that out from the paper. Now you will have a piece with a hole in it . Then around that mark your prefered seam allowance. You can then take that paper and slide it around your chosen fabric and select a design that you want to feature.

Say your fabric is floral that you like but the flowers might get "lost" if you just cut. With your paper you can slide until you get the flower you like in your cut opening, then lightly mark what you want. That will be what you will cut be sure to add your seam allowance.

You'll end up with a lot of scraps but those can be used in another "scrappy project".

    Welcome from Pleasant Hill, CA.

I always think of attic window's when I fussy cut. What is the part of the fabric that I want that portion of the fabric to show? That's where I cut..
