Default An Introduction...

Hi! I'm a newbie to this site, but have been quilting for about 3 years. I love modern quilting, and learning new techniques. My new passion is paper-pieced hexies ~ so addictive and fun!

I'm going to free motion quilt around the shape of the dragon, and the brown border... but I'm going to try hand quilting the rest of it. It's a whole new process for me, and I'm super excited about it! Also VERY hesitant... I really want to do as good a job quilting as I did with the hand piecing. This is why I'm here: I'm hoping to get all sorts of awesome hand quilting tips and tricks, especially for hexies.

So... let me hear it. What's your favorite needle / thread / thimble?... what is your favorite knot? How many stitches can you make with the layers of a hexie quilt? Do you use a hoop? Do you have a favorite chair / light / set up? I'm using wool batting on this project, what type do you prefer?

Super excited to hear your ideas and tips ~ going to start quilting this beast tomorrow!! (12/9/12)

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. That's an awesome hexagon dragon! I don't do a lot of hand quilting any more but when I do, I use my Q Snap floor frame. I have never hand quilted a hexagon quilt but I have seen antique ones done with 1/4 inch inside each hexagon. I think they did that because it was easier than quilting through the seams but your hexagons are so small that it does not look like an option. I think I might quilt a C shape inside each hexagon to suggest scales.

Hi there!. Love the quilt. Just a word of caution.....you have a lot of seams in this quilt. This is very challenging and tiring.
