maybe you could find a quilt shop in your area that has a beginner class and start there then maybe you won't be so over whelmed. The quilt shop can guide you into purchasing the right supplies and equipment and what each tool is for and all the little basic things that will get you on your way. I was very lucky, I had a quilting teacher across the road from me who took me under her wing and the rest is history. I am sure a beginner class would be just right for you. Or, maybe the local senior center has someone who will teach you.
Anyway, good luck on your journey one that you will surely love Best of all, have fun and enjoy

Welcome, MistyK, from south central Kentucky! So glad to have you with us.

I highly recommend to stay simple while you try the waters. There are so many notions, gadgets and gizmos out there ..... which are great.... but can be daunting! ;-)

The rail fence would be an excellent pattern as your first quilt. I did a red, white and blue one and loved it!

Regarding the machine ---I started with a low-end Brother machine from Wal-Mart and it did just fine. It is still going strong today.

Best wishes as you begin your journey!
