Crafter that is New to Quilting

Hello everyone,

My name is Josie and I live in Chattanooga TN. I'm very new to Quilting. I Knit and Crochet and met a lovely lady at church who told me she belongs to a Quilting group that meets once a week to make a quilt that is given to charity when finished. I'd always wanted to learn to quilt so I accepted her offer of checking it out. I've so far been twice and have helped out with the quilt they have in progress. I was given a little bit of scrap fabric to play with and I'm looking to learn how to make one of my own.

The block that I was shown how to do is a scrap 9 square block. I don't really know the name they gave me one block already made to use as a pattern. I've been watching youtube videos and reading different blogs to learn more. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone here and having fun learning.

Thanks,

Josie

A big welcome from the SHO-ME state - Missouri. You are probably working on a 9-patch - a very easy quilt block for a beginner!

Welcome from south Louisiana. The 9-patch was my first quilt block when I joined the local guild in July. Were you shown the easy way to do it?

No to be honest I was just given a block they had already done with a few cut out squares and that was it. I'd love to hear an easy way to do it or any suggestion at all. I feel a bit thrown in the deep end lol.

One of the easy ways to make a two color 9 patch is this:
Cut three strips of two different fabrics, all the same width. My suggestion is to use 2 1/2" width, cut from 2 fat quarters, Fabric A and Fabric B. Sew 2 sets of fabric A + B. Make as accurate 1/4" seam as you can. Use the remaining strips to create the following sets: A+B+A and B+A+B. If you have been accurate in your stitching, the width of your sets will be 6 1/2 inches. Cross cut your sets into 2.5 inches and arrange the pieces, match the seams, sew and you're done.
