My name is Maary and it's been years since I have quilted. I now have time to quilt again, and I need some help. My grandaughter wants to make a lap quilt for her Mom. Wants to incorporate family pictures. Whatever guidelines you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've made a couple of quilts with pictures. I've only used the sheets you put thru an injet printer (don't use a laser, it doens't work. trust me ugh, tee hee). Anyway... I've attached them to the top of the quilt with a satin stitch, and I've sewn them in like you would any other piece of fabric. Pretty simple to use. My only complaint... they don't shrink like the rest of your fabric when you wash it, so they pucker. Best thing I've found so far, is to add another layer of POLY batting under the picture, kinda like trapunto... to help it lay smooth.

Welcome to the Board. I've made a couple of quilts using the photo fabric you put through your printer but both of them were wall hangings and I don't expect them to be washed so I didn't think about what Rachel mentioned about it not shrinking. But if you prewash all your other fabric will that make much difference since all the shrinkage will already have taken place?

I have seen a few displays at the LQS where they made a regular quilt, like with just patchwork squares, but some of the squares had pockets made of the clear plastic stuff (vinyl?) that you would cover furniture with. This way a photo could be changed out, or removed for cleaning. It was a neat idea.

I recently incorporated pics in a quilt I just made for my hubby. I used Printed Treasures brand (I think they were in the package with green on it), got it at Joanns with a coupon. It worked well and I have washed the quilt and they held up well. good Luck!

Hello and welcome from SW Iowa. I have made a family tree wall hanging using photos. Just scanned them into my computer and printed them on the special fabric sheets I got at the fabric store. It turned out great.
