Hi everyone. I just stumbled on the site today. I am from the UK but am spending the next 5 months travelling around Canada and the States in a motorhome. Any tips on how to quilt on the move would be appreciated. I have been quilting for years but still consider myself a beginner because I am always learning! My husband does all the driving and the deal is that he can play golf at as many courses as we go along and I will visit quilt shops! Ahh bliss.

Welcome from western Canada. You're in for a LOT of driving and therefore a LOT of quilting! If you don't already hand-quilt, applique or hand-piece, I guess this might be the time to try it.
I know a lady who takes her sewing machine with her, since they hook up to power when they park. If you do that, you might want to stick with kits rather than dragging your stash along too!

Enjoy the tour. Stop lots and enjoy meeting the folks along the way. Keep us posted on your trip ....... and your quilting!!

Welcome! What a wonderful adventure awaits you! If you can take your sewing machine with you. My husband and I just spent 17 days driving from Los Angeles, CA back home to Pennsylvania and we visited 12 quilt shops during that time. In many quilt shops they told me that sometimes they made an agreement with people vacationing and rented machines or machine time in the shop to those folks.

Also, as mentioned, it might be the time to learn to do a hand project such as grandmothers flower garden or other type of English paper piecing. That is what I did during our road trip and I found that I really enjoyed and it is very relaxing.

Hi and Welcome from Northetn Indiana ! Sounds like you are going to have a wonderful trip ! Have you picked out any routes yet ? I agree English paper piecing is great for small easy project when you are traveling. And they have so many new designs/ kits/ patterns to make . I took some with me when I flew to Vegas and worked on it on the plane . My seatmates were fasinated :shock:

Thank you all so very much. I will give Grandmas a go whilst I am travelling. I have a simple sewing machine with me, as I sent my other machine home to UK. I am working on a spicy strip tease at the moment, but have to be hooked up to electricity to use the machine.
I have to tell you that I met up with my first home room teacher - form teacher if you are from UK here in Whitehorse - she owns Bears Paw Quilts quilt shop! I am lookingforward so much to making new friends as well as doing lots of quilting

Lucky you. I have the motorhome and the quilting, but am still trying to get my husband out of the uk. I think he has a fear of driving on the "wrong side of the road". I shall keep nagging him though. I am desperate to get to the quilt shops in the USA. Browsing online is just not the same as touching.

Welcome from Southern Ontario! You are going to have a great time on your trip! Tell your husband, it will be okay once he gets used to it!! He'll do great and you both will be so happy! One golfing, one quilting, sounds like the best of both worlds!!!
