Hello! A Floorquilter From New Mexico (Desert Southwest)

:) Hi! everyone. My name is Carolyn, and I love making floorquilts--No-sew fabric decoupaged floorcloths. I started making these walkable works of art over a year ago, and could not stop. My workshop is located in the scenic desert southwest, and is surrounded by beauty and inspiration. Because floorquilting with protective coatings is a newer craft, which so many quilters (both traditional & art) are interested in. What is especially nice, is that you can use your scrap remnants of fabric to construct these durable and appealing floorquilts--art quilts that you can actually walk on, and that will not wear-or-tear. Our floors, you could say, allow us, yet, another place to showcase our favorite fabrics and quilt designs. Happy quilting!

Good morning! everyone. My introduction was edited, which left half a sentence that I apologize for (I should have read the rules on links & advertising:eek:--sorry!). To continue with that sentence...Floorquilting is a newer craft that I want to share with others. They are so fun and easy to make--even a young child can construct one. Using just scrap remnants of fabric, both of my sons helped me with the two that follow....

Hello! So nice to meet so many kind people. Post #14 has a couple of pictures of my floorquilts. I will eventually be making a floorquilting tutorial. Just for the record: The construction of a (no-sew) floorquilt mainly involves the piecing of treated cotton fabrics onto a heavy-weight canvas to form an attractive design. Several coats of a decoupage medium and a clear water-based finish are then applied to protect the fabrics and enhance the colors on the fabrics. This is what enables us to walk on our quilts, while preventing wear-n-tear. Mine have stood up to the heaviest of traffic. I will further explain in the tutorial. Happy quilting!

Hi Pat! Floorquilts are spill-proof, but not entirely water-proof. In otherwords, any fluids that come in contact with a floorquilt would need to be removed within a reasonable amount of time, or as they occur. A water-based finish, which I use, will not yellow when it comes in contact with the sun, or yellow with the passing of time. I would recommend placing your floorquilt in a sheltered area of your porch, or removing it whenever there is rain that may reach it. Thanks for your interest, and Happy Quilting!

Welcome aboard the Board from Vermont! I've been meaning to try a floorquilt as a sample for the shop I work in, but haven't gotten around to it! Thanks for the reminder! Post some photos - we LOVE show and tell!

CarolynA 07-04-2012 09:53 AM

Hi! everyone. Post #14 on page 2 of this thread has a couple of pictures. I know what you mean paulswalia about time. It takes me nearly two weeks to make a floorquilt from scratch-to-finish, working 2-4 hours each day. It is a short amount of time compared to traditional quilts, but it is worth the time. These look amazing in quilting rooms. Often people match them with the room's color scheme and decor, and/or mimick a wall hanging, bed quilt, ect. Either way--no more boring floors. Happy Quilting!

lfstamper 07-04-2012 10:09 AM

Gorgeous floor quilts! Welcome from TX and thanks for sharing sew much!

lfstamper 07-04-2012 10:10 AM

What is the foundation for the floor quilts? Canvas?

CarolynA 07-04-2012 11:49 AM

Yes, a very heavy-weight 12 oz. or heavier cotton duck is preferred. The canvas must first be treated with a gesso primer before the treated fabrics are pieced onto it with a decoupage medium. Thanks for the compliments! everyone
