Hello from Scotland!
 

Hello everyone!

I live in Edinburgh, Scotland, and I've been quilting for about 3 years. My first ever project was a quilt for my brother's wedding present, so I was nothing if not ambitious! The quilt turned out great, although the wedding never happened, but at least he's nice and cosy :confused:

I have mostly used jelly rolls and layer cakes so far, but I went to a quilt show yesterday and came home with loads of fat quarters. I'm currently teetering on the edge of making things up for myself, rather than following patterns - does anyone have any suggestions for remaining calm in the face of a mountain of fabric??? ;)

Hi and welcome from Quebec city, Canada. I had to laugh, you are so right when you say "remaining calm in the face of a mountain of fabric???"
I can tell you how I started and I have just finished piecing my third quilt. I started about 6 years ago and I am a slow quilter. I do not like to follow pattern either because I am afraid I will get bored. So I start with block patterns and I change as the piecing progress..

Welcome to the board! I spent two weeks in Edinburgh a few years ago for work and loved it! We did all the 'tourist-y' things like touring the castle and Edinburgh Underground.
I am just starting to quilt myself. I would love to have a mountain of fabric! :D The quilters cache board (linked above) is a very good place to look for patterns. I like that they have links to completed blocks or quilts for each pattern so it is easier for me to visualize the finished product.

Hello there, my grand-parents came from Edinburgh and I lived and worked in Scotland until a few years ago, I now live on the Isle of Anglesey. As a side thought if you ever need parts or your machine sorted out do go and see David at David Drummond's, Haymarket Terrace, he is a love and so helpful.

As far as your stack of fabrics is concerned don't worry about it, it's not costing you any rent sitting there but will give you inspiration for loads of lovely quilts to come. Quilters cache is great but there are so many lovely patterns, for free out there that I would try a few of those before trying to make up your own, which can be filled with so many pitfalls.
