I've been lurking and now am a member.
Last week I decided to join this fun forum. I started quilting in 2003. I was giving chemo to a lady who wanted to make a quilt for each of her 5 children before she died. She was 40 and with the help of area quilters she managed. (She actually made 6 because her step-son did not like his.) Quilting was something I always wanted to do but with the busy life of working, children and helping on the farm I did not have time. This lady showed me that I needed to start now! I now have 4 grandchildren and even they help me. I am lucky to have a network of good friends who also quilt. I retired two years ago. At the same time my son, daughter-in-law and their 4 kids moved into the 3 bedrooms in our upstairs, while their house was being built 6 miles away. I loved every day of it! The grandkids were the 6th generation to live in this house! Last summer our daughter was moving to a new home and she lived here for 4 months. I am now in the process of remodeling my daughter's old room into a quilting room. I finally had time to have ceilings repaired. I just sanded, stained and poly coated the old fir floors. I am now waiting for it to harden. I might need suggestions on how to make this bright, 10 X11 room the perfect sewing room. I love reading all the comment and seeing all of your beautiful quilts.

Welcome to the board! Just go to the Mission Organization forum and you will get many ideas for making your sewing room. You may find you will be able to repurpose some furniture you already have and don't be afraid to go up the wall for extra space. I'm having to turn my sewing room back into a sewing/guest room. Happy for you that you have the extra room. My room is only 8x9 and odd because of the closet and doorway and a very large window, which I use sometimes as a design wall. I have skirt/pant hangers attached to a flannel vinyl backed tablecloth that is portable.

Welcome to the board from Southern California. It does sound wonderful that your family has been able to live together from time to time. My daughter needed to move back after her roommate moved to northern California to live with a boyfriend and my daughter was going back to college to get her masters degree. She is going to be moving out next month and I I am going to miss having her with us.

I thought about this and decided to reply this way: THINGS i WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY IF I JUST STARTED QUILTING: 1 I would buy more coordinated fabrics that somebody else already designed to go together. It would take a lot of guessing and hemming and hawing out of it for me and I wouldn't do so much (did), impulse buying. 2 I would start with shelves instead of totes too heavy to lift, and have to bend over to go through. 3 Since i would have my projects more color coordinated, I wouldn't end up with so much stash that I'll have to pass down to my dgd. (in other words...saved the money for bills etc.) 4 I wouldn't go buy fabrics ahead of time for my kids and grandkids when they tell me what they like. I would wait till i was ready to make their quilt...BC THEY CHANGE THEIR MINDS and I end up with lots of money spent on something that sits on the shelf. 5 I wouldn't buy so much that I can't keep it refolded. Creases can set in permanently. I would have less, more of my favorites and put tin foil around cardboard so I could wrap the fabric not tight, so creases and such wouldn't be such a threat. 6 I would keep my fabric shelves covered like I have for years to protect from dust and light that fades. 7 I would take samples of my fabrics with me when looking for a certain color etc. so I wouldn't keep guessing and buying the wrong thing. I had a blast buying fabrics, but it was always followed by a crash. (buyer's remorse...bc I could never quilt as fast as I could buy.) 8 I would have a really comfortable, roll around chair. (I do) 9 I wouldn't stock up heavily on threads that can depreciate over time. (I haven't done too terribly awful here.) 10 I wouldn't get so caught up with every famous quilters "way"...lots of them have their own techniques and tools to go with. oops! more money = more space needed to store them and not enough time to try them out! :eek: 11 I would go easier on myself and end up making more quilts etc. |

Thank you! You have a great list there. Thanks for taking the time to write them down. The fabric buying is a problem for me. I see stuff on line and it is too easy to purchase. My daughter-in-law said she would love a wedding ring quilt. I told her it was not going to happen until their 10th wedding anniversary. I needed more practice. Last year she told me her likes had changed.(Whew! I am still not ready to make a Wedding Ring!) I have been collecting '30s reproduction fabric but I will use that for myself and a Dresden Plate! I will heed your warnings!
