Hello there fellow quilters/sewers and friends! I'm new to this board and VERY new to quilting. I'm from ontario canada and am making my very first quilt! (never quilted in my life) anyway, I used up old fabric from left over projects and am making a twin size quilt for my daughter for xmas. I have cut the foundation, sewn the strips onto the foundation, sewn the blocks together and am now sandwiching the back the batting and the top. my question is, how do I start to quilt my work and where and how.....
I know I need to start in the middle and work my way down, also does anybody have any ideas on how I should quilt, do I just go up and down or across or follow a pattern..............like I said, I'm new to all this any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanksssssssssssss -Rose P.S posting a pic of my quilt not yet sewn together........... |

Hello and Welcome to the board :D:D:D
As to the quilting, part of the design choice comes from what batting you choose. Each brand/type has its own quilting requirements. That is where I would start first. |
Hello from southeast PA! USA I assume you will be machine quilting. I'm not a longarm quilter, so I would stitch-in-the-ditch. Start in the center & see how far you can go around blocks without having to stop. When you have to stop to move to another area, you can do a locking stitch when you stop & when you start again.

Hello! Welcome from Idaho! Becuase of the thickness involved, I would not get too fancy with the quilting. Depending on the batting you choose, I don't think I would do every ditch, just decide which seams you want to quilt next to and have fun. Just my opinion.

Hi,
Welcome from a Canadian expat! I agree with the suggestion to stipple, it is something that has a lot of forgiveness, but it would be helpful to practice a little so that you get the hang of it. Another option, take the top into your local quilt store and ask them for suggestions. |

As for quilting, you can do whatever you like. Most beginners find that in the ditch is the easiest, because you have a line to follow. However, meandering means that you just go where you like and don't follow any lines. I am not too far from you. Do you go to the quilt shop in St. Catharines - Kindred Spirits? The most important thing to remember is the quilt the whole quilt evenly, meaning the same denisity all over. |

Stippling is free motion quilinting that looks like puzzle pieces almost. You build a nice even rythym.
