Welcome to the board! Those "y" seams can be tricky for a new (and experienced quilters as well!) so I suggest using a pattern for no "y" seams. Here is a link to a pdf pattern on how to do it or you can just google no y seam tumbling blocks. http://www.myquiltfabric.com/pdf/Tumbling_Blocks.pdf

Welcome from NJ! I was relatively new to quilting when I did a tumbling block quilt as well. I used the english paper piecing method. Found it quite easy and was nice and portable as well! Sorry no links for you but if you do a search for that method and/or quilt pattern I'm sure there will be a zillion hits for you to pick from! Good luck. Love tumbling blocks!

Welcome from another NorCal-er! I'm new to quilting too and struggling with my first quilt using super-soft flannel. Lint is everywhere. Good luck with your tumbling blocks!
