New guy intro
1 Attachment(s)
I'm a new quilter. I kinda jumped into it with both feet. I'm in the Navy and work on a submarine, and it's cold. So I decided that I needed a quilt. I thought how hard can it be? I know how to sew. So off the the fabric store we go. I had a rough Idea of what I wanted and as we were looking thru the books trying to calculate a very kind lady helped us where we were lost. So we got the fabric, much more expensive than I had figured but oh well. So we get home and now we are trying to figure out how to cut out the fabric. We started with a yard stick and rotary cutter and went to scissors after the rotary cutter became to difficult. Fast forward to the day before I go on deployment and we still haven't really started on anything. So my wife starts cutting squares and I start sewing. With all the novice unknowns and arguments we finally got done at about 2 in the morning. Not bad for a couple of amateurs. Now we are trying to make another quilt. This one will be for our queen size bed. We are trying to use just the scrap that we have from various projects. We are still trying to figure out the design and aren't looking forward to cutting out 450 squares but we will eventually get done.
Here is the first quilt I did. |
Welcome from NY!! Very nice quilt! You can learn a lot of info on this board!! Cutting out a lot of squares is easy if you you strip cut. It also helps if you use a acrylic ruler with your rotary cutter. Yard sticks are very hard to cut along.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. Congratulations on your first quilt! It looks great and may it be the first of many.

THIS IS a pretty quilt. You did excellant work on it. Keep at it. I like the colors too.
|
Welcome Rusty. You and your wife did a pretty good job as quilting newbies. I do suggest that you consider purchasing a 3" X 24" and a 3" X 9.5" plastic ruler to go with your rotary cutter. Those two are the size rulers I use the most. Quilting life is so much easier with appropriate tools.
I can't tell from you picture but is it just the top that is finished? If so, how are you going to quilt it? Or will you tie it? |
Welcome. You might want to look into strip piecing. Try www.quiltinaday.com There are many videos.

Very nice quilt!! I thought you were going to tell us that you sewed that on the submarine... we have heard of quilters who take their sewing machines in the rvs, the semi truck quilters but a submarine!! LOL!!
You did great... check out eleanor burns and the log cabin quilt or rail fence quilt these are both great patterns for beginners and fast... I started this way and my husband and I tied the log cabin flannel quilts I made for the family. big hugs quiltinmama |
Welcome and nice job on your first quilt
|
Welcome from AZ! My husband is an ex-submariner too, and he is also my 'creative consultant' when it comes to my quilting. When I get stuck, he usually has a good idea to help me get 'unstuck!'

Welcome to the world of quilting. You and your wife did a wonderful job. To aid with cutting use a rotary cutter, mat and acrilic ruler. Also a quarter inch foot is nice for the sewing machine. Thank you for your serice to our country.

Welcome to the board from Spring, Tx. Looks like they've already told you about both strip piecing and using an acrylic ruler with that rotary cutter. Hope you're using a cutting mat under that rotary cutter. There are a lot of beginners tutorials online as well as some great beginner books. Looking at the tutorials here will be quite helpful. No! You do not have to individually cut a bunch of squares - isn't that great news. Happy quilting and you can learn a lot here!

Hello from Michigan!

Hello and welcome from western Nevada! on the quilt!
|
perhaps you didn't have the matt that you need to use the rotary cutter. One quilt should not have dulled the blade. Great job on the quilt and thank you for your service
|
You've done a great job on your first quilt! Kudos to you for persevering!
