Hello from northern lower Michigan... north of Traverse City, south of the Mac bridge...
I'm fair (blonde), Fifties (53 in a couple of weeks) and Featherbrained (this goes with the 50s I guess).
I LOVE to quilt, sew, read and garden. Im a retired home designer and have just started pattern designing.

I've been a quilter since the 80's but it's just in the past few years that it has become a passion. I have two daughters, both grown, one in college, one is an art teacher.

Right now Im working on a challenge quilt for the local quilt store. We were given 4 fabrics and told to use at least some of them along with whatever else we wanted. Finished quilt needs to be 24" square and finished by June 30th. I'm still drawing it up BUT I plan to have it finished in time, even if I have to sew all night from now till the 30th!
I have a pile of UFOs that are sitting in a pile awaiting time at the machine... hopefully I will get back to them

Hello and Welcome :D :D :D

Mplsgirl 06-15-2009 04:37 PM

You are in a beautiful area! I have been on the bridge, too. I have to lay on the floor of the car to cross it because I don't do bridges well!

Mousie 06-15-2009 04:56 PM

Hi northernDeb, welcome from Florida! :D
looking forward to pics of your stuff...you will hear that a lot, but to be sure, it is worth posting, cause ppl come out of the woodwork for pictures, here! :D

NorthernDeb 06-17-2009 08:53 AM

Thanks for the warm welcome. I will post a pic of the challenge quilt when it's a little farther along. I have most of the feathered star part done (not the middle though) and am still designing the applique part.
I had to laugh about sitting on the floor of the car for bridges... I do that for mountains. We took a trip to visit my brother who lives in the Sierra Nevada mountains... I WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN... EVER!! I had to sit on the floor of the car and still I was shaking like a leaf. My sweet hubby and daughters thought this was hilarious! For some reason the bridge doesnt bother me. We dont go over it very often.
Mac Island is about an hour from us (to the ferry) and that's somewhere I LOVE to go. It's such a beautiful place this time of year. It gets a little stinky later in the summer when its hot and all the horse by-product is all over the streets.
If anyone takes a trip to this part of Michigan, let me know... there's a BUNCH of great quilt shops out here. There's 6 nearby!

Deb: Hi from Southern Michigan, Jackson area. My husband and I spend a weekend in Traverse City in September each year. While he is at meetings, I spend the time browsing the local quilt shops. Renee House of Quilts is very cool and I had a great visit at the Quilting Bee.

Welcome from another Michigander, NE Michigan here. I was in your area just yesterday and went to the quilt shop on 72, It is great. I am new to this site also.

A smug welcome from Ireland - smug because I have finished two UFO's this year. I have to say I feel a lot better now that they are off my conscience. I really envy you having all those quilt shops nearby - that's probably WHY you have the UFO's.

:D Hi Deb from another Michigander. I'm also north of Traverse City, in Elk Rapids. We spend our winters in SW Fl but this is HOME!~ Going to Petoskey in the AM for quilt show? I'm also not a fan of bridges but the Mighty Mac is not so scary in the winter!!

NorthernDeb 06-18-2009 07:25 PM

Penny, Im just a little north of you... just south of Charlevoix. There's an adorable quilt shop in Charlevoix on the street subway is on. If you go through there, you should check it out. Also a great little shop in East Jordan.
I LOVE Renees. That's always a stop for me when I head to Traverse.

Im going to be at the quilt show in the afternoon on Friday. I will be counting the viewers choice votes so that we can award that ribbon at the end of the first day. We hung quilts up today and I loved so many of them. Some of the ones that impressed me the most were the mini quilts. It's amazing the patience that some quilters have... working with those tiny little pieces and everything is so exact.
